Holiday Monday was marvelous at the Cranberry Marsh RW in southwest Whitby.
Over aperiod of 6 hrs. as many as 50 visitors, along with the counting
observers, had a great day. Indeed, expectations for a Broad-winged flight did
not materialize, but all were happy with the sail-pasts of 2 Bald Eagles (2nd.
yr. and an adult), the joy of identifying high-flying migrating raptors, the
first Peregrine Falcon of the season, 58 R-t Hummingbirds streaming past, many
Monarch butterflies, along with Chimney Swifts, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, a
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, Wilson's Snipe, and on and on.

Visitors:
Our thanks to Mike and Viv from Yorkshire, UK and to the many other
visitors to the Tower today.
Weather:
The day started cool with light winds from the North West. Cloudy with
sunny periods throughout the day.
Raptor Observations:
Fifty raptors today with Sharpies and Harriers battling for top spot. Eight
Broad-winged Hawks solo or in pairs added some interest. Visitors were
thrilled when an Osprey circled low overhead affording wonderful looks at
this bird. Three young and one adult Bald Eagle were spotted later in the
day way up in the stratosphere.
Non-raptor Observations:
A family of Pied-billed Grebes were spotted along with a Sora in the marsh.
Two Shoveler Duck passed overhead. Two Solitary Sandpipers joined the Great
Egret and the Great Blue Heron in the Turtle Pond. Two Wood Duck landed in
the Trout Pond. Six Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were spotted zooming past
the Tower.
