I had a nice start to the fall pelagic season at the west end of Lake Ontario today. Shortly after noon, I had a juvenile Sabine's Gull off Van Wagners Beach. The bird landed on the water a fair distance out and was not re-seen during the short time I was there. The winds are brisk out of the NE, and following last night's cold front, the conditions are very good for the first jaegers of the season.
Directions to Van Wagners Beach: >From the QEW highway coming from the west, take the Woodward Ave exit; turn right at the stoplight at the end of the ramp; turn right at the next lights onto Beach Blvd, go under the QEW, then turn right again at the lights onto Van Wagners Beach Rd. Continue about 1 km to the parking lots near Hutch's Restaurant. >From the QEW coming from the east, take the Hwy 20 exit (Centennial Parkway); go north to the North Service Rd; turn left at the lights; continue east as the road bends right then left and becomes Van Wagners Beach Dr; continue about 1 km to the parking lots near Hutch's Restaurant.
