Assistant Coordinator, Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario

Overall Accountability

Ontario Nature seeks a creative and goal-oriented individual for the
position of Assistant Coordinator of the Atlas of the Breeding Birds of
Ontario.  Reporting to the Coordinator, the Assistant Coordinator will
work on various aspects of book production, including summarizing data,
research, fact checking, reviewing written materials, proof-reading and
assisting in the management of documents through the writing, review and
editing stages. The preferred candidate will be involved in writing and
editing species accounts for the book. The candidate will also be
involved in marketing and promotion for the book.

The ideal candidate has a love for and appreciation of nature, sets
ambitious goals and is results-oriented. The successful candidate will
be energetic and dynamic, knowledgeable about avian natural history and
conservation. The Assistant Coordinator will be detail oriented, and
will enjoy being part of a team that is committed to excellence in
program delivery.

Ontario Nature protects and restores natural habitats through research,
education and conservation, connecting thousands of individuals and
communities with nature. We have a network of more than 140 affiliated
nature clubs across Ontario and a staff of 20.  We own and manage 21
Nature Reserves that protect and restore outstanding examples of
Ontario's natural features.  Current conservation programs include

The Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario is a partnership of Ontario
Nature, Bird Studies Canada, the Ontario Field Ornithologists, the
Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Canadian Wildlife
Service.  The 2nd edition of the Atlas, to be available in September
2007, will be an essential conservation tool and reference, providing
information on the distribution and relative abundance of birds breeding
in the province, and identifying changes that have occurred since the

Necessary Qualifications, Skills and Experience
-     A degree in biology, ecology or environmental studies
-     Experience in research, writing and publishing
-     Experience working in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access
-     Demonstrated research skills and attention to detail
-     Good communication skills (written and verbal)
-     Scientific publications, preferably on birds
-     Experience in marketing and promotion
-     High enthusiasm, energy and ability to meet deadlines

Desirable Attributes
-     Extensive knowledge of Ontario's birds would be an asset
-     Experience working in Quark would be an asset
-     Editing experience would be an asset
-     Experience in web page development would be an asset

This is a one-year term full-time employment position, with a
possibility of renewal dependent upon funding.  Salary is commensurate
with qualifications and experience.  This position is based at the
Breeding Bird Atlas Office at the University of Guelph.
