This seems to have been the summer of the Dickcissel. Today (July 9), Michael Carlson and I went to look for the Dickcissels reported yesterday. We saw and heard 2 male Dickcissel's on the east side of 33/34 Sideroad in Bruce County, southeast of Port Elgin.
To find these birds, take Highway 21 south from Port Elgin, for approximately 6.5 Km. to Bruce Saugeen Town Line Road (formerly called and still signed as Bruce 11) and turn left (east). Proceed for about 10 Km down the road (counting the roads on your LEFT (North side), it will be about 5 roads down) to 33/34 Sideroad. The first Dickcissel was seen singing about 125 yards down from the corner of these 2 roads in the tallest solitary tree. It was found in the dead branches of this tree, on the right side, about 4 feet from the top. The other male bird was singing another 150 yards down the road in the top of the short shrubs about 35 yards from the side of the road. Both of these birds are quite vocal in spite of the high winds this afternoon. Take care, Fred Jazvac Southampton.
