Birders

A lot of excitement is being generated by Henslow's Sparrow on apparent territory in Carden Township.

I remind everyone that this species is endangered in Ontario. The Ontario Field Ornithologists and ONTBIRDS expect everyone to behave responsibly and give these birds the opportunity to breed successfully.

In this case this specifically means DO NOT cross the fence into private land for any reason. If someone obtains permission it better be written and sanctioned by the Ministry of Natural Resources. The bird can be photographed and taped from the road. I know from personal experience in New York State that breeding can be confirmed (carrying food) from the road.

I should also mention that it is inappropriate to use Ontbirds to comment on the behaviour of others.

For more details please review Ontbirds Guidelines (follow the link at the bottom of this and every post to Ontbirds)

Directions:
The spot is on the west side of Wylie Road about 200m North of McNamee Road just past a little rise in the road (first area of trees & bush). Bird is in the grassy field on the west side.

Take Hwy 48 east from Beaverton (hwy splits off from Hwy 12) to the town of Kirkfield and then turn left/north on CR6, follow north past the Kirkfield Lift Locks and as the road turns hard west there is a dirt road on the right, this is McNamee, Wylie runs north off McNamee just after you turn.

This morning at least a dozen birders saw and heard the Henslow's Sparrow from Wylie Road. It became difficult to see after the wind increased about 10 a.m. but we heard it singing regularly. We feel it's behaving like an unmated male based on its frequent singing at midday. Distance to the Henslow's averages about 50 m from the road. This is the first Henslow's Sparrow we've seen on the Carden Alvar in over 16 years of birding there. See photo of the Henslow's and a habitat photo taken this morning from the roadside through a telescope (digiscoping) http://jeaniron.ca/2006/Henslow's%20Sparrow.htm

Directions: Go north about 2 km from the Kirkfield Lift Lock to McNamee Road on your right. Go 200 m to Wylie Road on left. The Henslow's is in the field west of Wylie Road about 200 m north of intersection just past a little ridge with scattered trees. Best to go early in the morning (sun at back and less wind) or late afternoon if cloudy. It sings often and its short song "tse-Slick" carries well, but is somewhat ventriloquial. Scan for it with binoculars then use a scope for a better view.

Good luck,
