After a week of botanizing and birding in the Bruce Peninsula I returned to the massive tree canopy of Thickson's Woods-gorgeous walking, few birds, wonderful gooseberries and black currants, and don't forget to peak under the 2-leaved Mayapples for a view of a single large white flower.
This AM I scoped Corbett's Creek for an hour--many Carps, many Mallard families (one mother chased off a would-be-harassing Mute Swan), Blue-winged teals and Gadwalls, 3 Spotted Sandpipers, 2 Dunlins, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, several peeps, GREEN HERON (both days), 2 Great Blue Herons and a busily-stalking yellow-legged, red-eyed not-quite adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON--light brown where the black will be, and a white plume. Hall's Rd. in Whitby has been blocked off for a while-- road repairs, which may include paving. For Thickson's--exit 401 at Thickson Rd. in Whitby, south toward the lake, turning east along the roadway which parallels the pine woods. High heat and humidity evidently did not deter the birds or the birders, and several interesting reports were received. The most exciting find was a SNOWY EGRET on May 31, at the edge of The Marshes golf course near the high tech business park off Terry Fox Dr. in Kanata. It was last seen flying east toward Shirley's Bay that evening, and it was searched for the following day but has not yet been relocated. Other new species reported locally since the 28th were Least Bittern and Sedge Wren, both found in the Richmond Fen along the railway tracks east of the intersection of Kettles Rd. and Munster Rd. Common Nighthawks have been reported since then as well, from a variety of urban and suburban neighbourhoods such as Beacon Hill, Overbrook and Britannia, and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was found in the Britannia Conservation Area along with the 1st local report of Alder Flycatcher on the morning of the 30th. Waterfowl of note were 2 late Snow Geese and 2 late Brant still at the Embrun sewage lagoons on the 29th. Thirteen species were at the Alfred sewage lagoons including Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, several Redhead and numerous Ruddy Ducks, as well as a late female Bufflehead. Common Moorhen and American Coot were also present here. A permit is required to visit these lagoons, and can be obtained by contacting the township office at (613) 679-2292. Several of the eastern lagoons were productive for shorebirds, albeit in low numbers. Ten species were reported collectively from the Alfred, St-Isidore, Casselman, and Embrun lagoons, including Semipalmated Plover, Lesser Yellowlegs, Upland Sandpiper, Semipalmated, Least and White-rumped Sandpiper, Dunlin, Short-billed Dowitcher and Wilson's Phalarope. Upland Sandpipers are of interest as a local breeding species, due to the paucity of sightings in recent years; the most recent new report was of a pair in the fields along Constance Bay Rd. near the turn-off from the Dunrobin Rd. on the 30th. The numbers of Bonaparte's Gulls on the Ottawa River increased to approx. 30 birds by the afternoon of June 1st, and the 1st baby Ring-billed Gulls have been noted in the large colony at Deschenes. In owl reports, both Barred and Northern Saw-whet Owls were heard in the Richmond/Munster area in the wee hours of the 29th. A male BREWSTER'S WARBLER was still very vocal along the Thomas Dolan Parkway northwest of Stonecrest Dr. as of the 31st, the Richmond/Munster area had several warbler species including Cape May and Blackpoll on the 29th, and at Britannia on the 30th there were Northern Parula, Magnolia, Blackpoll and Wilson's still moving through. Thank you - Good Birding! - End transcript
