X-BeenThere: [email protected] X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 31 May 2006 12:36:04 -0000 Hi Folks, sorry this is late, I sent the original yesterday but apparently it did not get through. My brother, Robert, and I did a "biggish" day on Monday, travelling from the southwest end of Ottawa, out to Opinicon Road, back to the west and south ends of Ottawa and then out to the eastern sewage lagoons (Embrun & Alfred - permit required at the latter), we ended the day with 142 species, starting at 4am and ending at Alfred at 7:45pm - didn't want to knock ourselves out as we had to work today! Some of our highlights include the following: 1. Richmond Fen - Least Bittern (heard-only), 3 American Bittern, 10+ Sedge Wren, Canada Warbler, flock of 120+ Brant over Kettles Rd, Merlin, pair of Black-billed Cuckoo (Kettles Rd and railroad tracks), Mourning Warbler (Kettles just east of RR tracks), Northern Saw-whet Owl (calling from woods along tracks), many each of Winter Wren, Nashville Warbler & Northern Waterthrush, 1 Brown Creeper singing, Cape May Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler 2. Opinicon Rd - 5 Cerulean Warbler, 5 Golden-winged Warbler, 2 Yellow-throated Vireo, Wild Turkey, Common Raven, 2 Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered & Broad-winged Hawks (1 of each), Barred Owl calling at 10am, 1 Olive-sided Flycatcher, 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - all of these except the Red-shouldered were seen & heard from the road. 3. Shirley's Bay - 3 distant terns that I felt were Arctic Terns based on "look & feel" but they never got close enough to confirm identifying marks, 3 Common Goldeneye, 3 Hooded Merganser 4. Britannia - Warblers - 1 Wilson's, 3 Pine, 3 Blackpoll, 1 Tennessee (couldn't find the GH Owls) 5. Ottawa Airport (south end) - Grasshopper Sparrow along Leitrim on airport fence, Vesper Sparrow off Boweseville just south of Leitrim - small trail on east side of Boweseville 6. Embrun S.L. - 2 Brant, 2 Snow Geese, 8 Wilson's Phalarope, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, unbelievably, NO OTHER SHOREBIRDS!!! 7. Alfred Bog boardwalk - Hermit Thrush singing, 1 Lincoln's Sparrow singing 8. Alfred S.L. - 3 Redhead, 1 male Northern Pintail, a few American Wigeon, Blue & Green-winged Teal (couple of each), many Ruddy Duck, Gadwall, 3 American Black Duck, several Northern Shoveler, 1 female Bufflehead, 1 Sora, 2 Virginia Rail, several Marsh Wren, 2 Am Coot, 5 C. Moorhen, 3 White-rumped, 20+ Semip & 5 Least Sandpipers - NO OTHER SHOREBIRDS!!! (recurring theme). Upland Sandpiper flew over road just southwest of lagoons (maybe it was on Hwy 417, can't remember now). All in all, we had a great day but for the lack of shorebirds (that have been reported in the past week!). Cheers & good birding, Frank Pinilla Thornhill, ON DIRECTIONS: Richmond Fen is just west of the town of Richmond (sw of Ottawa), the route we took from Ottawa is to follow Franktown Rd west from Hwy 416, turn south on Munster Rd until it's terminus at Kettles Road, turn left and cross over the RR tracks, park here. Then the long walk out along the active railway for about 3km (one way)! Watch out for bugs and trains, the VIA train is very fast and deceivingly quiet until it's almost on top of you!!! Opinicon Road - follow Perth Road north from Kingston until you reach Raymonds Corners, turn right on Opinicon, drive slowly with windows down, listening for birds. From Ottawa, head towards Smith's Falls, taking Hwy 15 sw from town and just beyond the town of Crosby, turn right at Chaffey's Locks Rd. (which then turns into Opinicon Rd). Shirley's Bay - take the Moodie Dr exit north off Hwy 417 in Kanata, turn left on Carling Ave, then turn right on Rifle Rd follow to parking lot at the end. You must call the Rifle Range before heading out to the dike, no trespassing while shooting is going on. Land is owned by the DND. From parking lot walk up to Rifle Rd, turn right just inside the fence and follow the path which takes you out to a dike. Britannia Park - exit Hwy 417 at Pinecrest and head north, turn right on Richmond and then left on Poulin, follow down to the end past a yacht club, park along the road. Ottawa Airport (for sparrows) - Leitrim Rd runs along the southern end of the airport, Grasshopper Sparrows seen along airport fence (not much room to pull over on Leitrim), also Vesper, Clay-colored Sparrow found here. Embrun SL - just south of the village of Embrun, take exit 79 (Limoges Rd) off Hwy 417 east of Ottawa, head south over the river to "Rte 400", turn right/west and the sewage lagoons will be on the north side. Alfred SL (Permit Required, call the town of Alfred and ask for Richard Villeneuve) - following Hwy 174 east along the river out of Ottawa will take you to the town of Alfred, turn right/south on Peat Moss Road, the two lagoons will be on the left/east. From Hwy 417, exit #51 at Cty Rd 9, head north, turn right at C.R. #10, then left at CR #15, follow to Concession Rd #10 (gravel road which heads straight east when Hwy #15 turns north), then left on Peat Moss Rd, lagoons will be a couple of km north on the right side.
