Although the majority were BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, there were many = DUNLIN, RUDDY TURNSTONES and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and some distant = peeps in the group. Wonderful to see all of these in full breeding = plumage. Pt. Crewe about 20 km east of Wheatley on Rd 3 in Kent County. A small flock of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen on the rocks near the = Pelee Club. Today was a beautiful day before the rain and a good day on The = Islands. Alfred Adamo picked me up at home and away we went to The = Islands. It started a little slow but as the sun rose the birds became more = active and off we went on the usual Island walk.=20 As we observed and I counted the usual birds Alfred drew my attention = to a Heron overhead at 7:45 am flying NNW over Wards Island and as I = caught the rear end of the bird Alfred identified it as a Little Blue = Heron and I concurred. A life bird on The Islands for the both of us. We then continued on with bigger smiles and found birds in small groups = at several places until we were on Hanlans Point on the East side of the = airfield where Alfred came up with 5 Sandhill Cranes heading in an = easterly directions (I missed them). We were fortunate to catch the ferry back to the city and his car just = a hair before the heavy rain came down. A good day and in between these 2 nice sightings we came up with the = following birds which are only some of the ones we found. 10 Canvasbacks, 1 Little Blue Heron, 2 Great Egrets,1 Great Blue and = 20+ Black-crowned night-Herons, 1 Northern Harrier plus a Peregrine = Falcon carrying prey, 5 Sandhill Cranes, Solitary Sandpiper, Bonaparte's = Gulls, 3 Belted Kingfishers, 22 Least Flycatchers, Great crested = Flycatchers, E. Kingbirds, 5 Blue-headed Vireos, Red-eyed and Warbling = Vireos, Veery, Swainson's Thrush, 9 Wood Thrush, 19 Gray Catbirds, Brown = Thrashers, Carolina, Winter and House Wrens, 13 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, = Purple Martins and Cliff Swallows, 14 Warbler species including = Blackburnian, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Ovenbirds, 2 Mourning, Wilson's = and Canada, 8 Sparrow species including Lincoln's and E. Towhees, = Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and E. Meadowlark. As I said a good day to be out and the only other birder seen was a = local islander. DIRECTIONS TORONTO ISLANDS (Wards Island to Hanlans Point - without side trips is 5 = km) To get to the Toronto Islands from Queen and Yonge Streets on the TTC. = If your on the subway southbound stay on it and get off at Union = Station, walk south about 1 km to the ferry docks at the foot of Bay = Street at Queens Quay and you are there. If in an auto on the Gardener = Expressway or on Lakeshore Blvd, then exit at Bay Street and drive south = to Queens Quay, there are lots of parking lots nearby (fee). There is a fee for using the island ferries ($6.00 adult / $3.50 for = seniors & students) and to find out the sailing times you can phone = (416) 392-8193. There are washrooms on the islands as well as the city = side at the ferry docks and you can pick up a schedule at the docks or = check on line. The 1st boat to Wards Island (my preferred starting point) is 6:35 am = and the 2nd is 7:00 am Monday to Friday.=20 The 1st is at 6:35 am and the 2nd boat is at 7:15 am on Saturday, Sunday = and Holidays. The 1st boat to Hanlans Point is 8:00 am and the 2nd boat is at 8:30 am = Monday to Friday. The 1st is at 8:15 am and the 2nd boat is at 9:15 am on Saturday, Sunday = and Holidays. If arriving in early am you must obtain your ticket from a machine just = inside the gate so be sure to have $1.00 and $2.00 and/or 25 cent coins = before you arrive at the docks as there is no place to get change and = the machine does not make change. (There is a change machine there if = you want to chance it). There are coffee shops across from the ferry docks in the building on = the northwest corner and they are open early. food and beverages on The = Islands when open are very expensive i.e. soft drink $3.00 plus.
