While waiting for the Pelee Island ferry this evening I walked out to the end of the pier and spotted a Red-necked Phalarope out on the water. The bird was hanging around and feeding in the little "harbour" that the ferry pulls into, flying from the dock out to the breakwater and back and offering some nice views.
Directions to Leamington ferry: From the 401 take exit 48 - Hwy 77 south as far as it goes. The street eventually ends at the ferry dock. The ferry parking lot is ferry passengers only, however to the right is a restaurant from which you should still be able to walk out and see the water. Winds are light from the east. Just reported at 10:30 AM was a Pacific Loon off the end of Shuster Trail. A second summer Lesser Black-backed Gull was at the Tip this morning. Amongst the almost 20 species of warblers seen from the Tip to the Half Way Stop was Hooded, Blue-winged, and Mourning. A Willow Flycatcher and a Marsh Wren were also seen in the Tip area. Neither the Grasshopper or Henslow's Sparrow of yesterday has been reported again as yet. A pair of Cerulean Warblers were seen near #12 on the Woodland Nature Trail. A Worm-eating Warbler and an Acadian Flycatcher were also reported from the WNT. A Hooded Warbler was reported from the Redbud Footpath. Along the Shuster Trail birders observed a singing Mourning, a Prothonotary, and a Yellow-breasted Chat. A Sedge Wren added to viewing pleasure. The Eastern Screech-Owls continue to thrill first time viewers in Tilden Woods. Warblers seen in Tilden included Blackburnian, Black-throated Green, Blue-winged, Bay-breasted, and Black-and-white. Further north at Sanctuary was a report of a Connecticut Warbler. The Summer Tanager was seen again today near the southern end of Sanctuary. Reports have been received of a Least Tern at the St. Clair National Wildlife Area.
