OFO members planning to attend the Algonquin Park trip on Saturday should be aware of the following:
There are still extensive patches of snow and melt water in shaded areas of Algonquin Park, so participants should be prepared to wear high waterproof footwear for use when we access such areas. However, the snow has gone everywhere else. Periods of rain are forecast for Saturday here, so bring appropriate gear. The trip will take place regardless of the weather, but the chances of finding northern species such as Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Gray Jay (which are the primary objectives of this event) will be much reduced when it is raining. The trip begins at the West Gate of the Park at 9 a.m. You will require a park use permit, available at the gate, in order to go on the trip. We will be driving a total of about 100 km, so please purchase gas before you arrive since there is no gas available in Algonquin at this time of year. Hope to see you on Saturday.
