The following were some good sightings & hearings from Cranberry's north
platform during the late AM of April 13-- Merlin flying over, 5 Ruddy Ducks,
along with calling Leopard Frogs (I saw 3) and many Wood Frogs. A Ring-necked
Pheasant was heard.

>From the south platform--American Bittern, Pied-billed Grebe, several American
>Coots, etc.

Along Hall's Rd.--quite tame male & female Wild Turkey; I do believe there are
at least 3, one being a much larger male.

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 10:00 AM, THURSDAY APRIL 13, 2006

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Spring migrants continue to return.......

The 1st reports of Common Loon and Red-necked Grebe were from
Shirley's Bay on April 12th, a Black-crowned Night-Heron was seen
in downtown Ottawa on the 8th, and a record early Brant was in the
flooded fields along Frank Kenny Rd. on the 6th. A report of 2
TRUMPETER SWANS came in on the 12th, from the Quebec side of the
Ottawa River at Baie de la Pentecote in Parc National de
Plaisance. Among the 14 species of waterfowl seen at Marais des
Laiches Ouest sector of the marshes east of Gatineau, Quebec on
the 12th, there was a male EURASIAN WIGEON and the 1st local
report of American Coot. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen
again on the Jock River south of the bridge at Twin Elm on the
morning of the 9th - probably the same bird was seen slightly
farther east in the large pond on the east side of Moodie Dr.
south of Trail Rd. in the early afternoon of the same day. Also
in the Moodie Dr. pond on the 9th, a pair of Redhead was reported
again among 13 spp. of waterfowl along with a Greater Yellowlegs
and 2 Belted Kingfishers. Other 1st local reports included a pair
of Blue-winged Teal in a small pond along March Valley Rd. on the
9th, and a Wilson's Snipe at the corner of Bank St. and Lester Rd.
on the 11th.

The recent mild weather prompted the return of Ospreys to our area
- there were several reports including at least one bird in the
Constance Creek wetland along Thomas Dolan Parkway on the weekend.
Increasing numbers of migrating Turkey Vultures were also noted,
and at least 4 Bald Eagles were seen on the weekend including 2 on
the Ottawa River near Plaisance and another 2 in the Kanata and
Dunrobin areas along with an adult Red-shouldered Hawk, several
Red-tailed Hawks, and a few Rough-legged Hawks and American
Kestrels. Pairs of Merlins have been seen and heard displaying in
suburban locations such as Rothwell Heights and Carlington
Heights.

A male Gray Partridge was seen at an unspecified location near
Chrysler east of Ottawa on the 11th. An adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull was still at the Moodie Dr. pond on the 9th, and a lone Snowy
Owl was still on the rapidly receding ice on the Ottawa River
between Andrew Haydon Park and Dick Bell Park the same day. A
Northern Mockingbird 1st reported last weekend continues to hang
out behind Nestow Dr. in Nepean; it was seen and heard several
times from the field along the railroad tracks north of Nestow
this past week. Other more expected species are back including
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Northern Flicker, Tree Swallow, Ruby-
crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, Chipping, Vesper and Swamp Sparrow
and Eastern Meadowlark, and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Fox Sparrows
and White-throated Sparrows continue to move through.

Thank you - Good Birding!
