Before the rains came in on Wednesday, April 12 morning, Thickson's Woods was alive with tree-top and understory birds. Highlights were PINE WARBLER, several YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, several RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, EASTERN TOWHEE, FOX SPARROWS, HERMIT THRUSH, YWLLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS.
I do not believe the Great Egret has been seen for 2 days. Exit the 401 at Thickson Rd. in Whitby, south toward the waterfront, east along the north fringe of the pine forest, to park. If you arrive at the "right time" along Hall's Rd. you may see male & female WILD TURKIES. Yesterday they both strolled out at the north path entry, without a "care in the world" for us. On Cranberry Marsh-- Ruddy Ducks, Ring-necked Ducks, Wood Duck, N.Shovelers, Pied-billed Grebe, Am. Coot, among others. Hall's Rd. is one block east of Lakeridge Rd. in southwest Whitby, accessed from Bayly/Victoria St. Doug Lockrey, Whitby From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Apr 12 12:23:04 2006 Return-Path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Delivered-To: [email protected] Received: from BAYC1-PASMTP10.BAYC1.HOTMAIL.COM (bayc1-pasmtp10.bayc1.hotmail.com [65.54.191.170]) by king.hwcn.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DAB1D638BF for <[email protected]>; Wed, 12 Apr 2006 12:22:48 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> X-Originating-IP: [64.230.124.222] X-Originating-Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Received: from Base ([64.230.124.222]) by BAYC1-PASMTP10.BAYC1.HOTMAIL.COM over TLS secured channel with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.1830); Wed, 12 Apr 2006 09:24:24 -0700 From: "Don Wigle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2006 12:22:49 -0400 Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.6626 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2670 Importance: Normal X-OriginalArrivalTime: 12 Apr 2006 16:24:25.0031 (UTC) FILETIME=[90227D70:01C65E4D] Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.1 Subject: [Ontbirds]Ospreys and Gray Partridge near Cornwall X-BeenThere: [email protected] X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2006 16:23:04 -0000 Yesterday (April 11) we saw (and photographed) a male Gray Partridge near Crysler (northwest of Cornwall). At Cooper's Marsh (east of Cornwall), we saw several Tree Swallows - a local birder told us they had just returned. On the western edge of the marsh we saw two Ospreys. Cooper's marsh is about 15 km east of Cornwall on Hwy 2. You see a sign and the marsh about 1 km before reaching the parking lot. There are board walks through the marsh and a dike around the marsh plus blinds for observing waterfowl. These are the islands just north of the Canada Centre for Inland Waters (CCIW) in Burlington and adjacent to Eastport Dr. The bird was in one of the trees along with nesting Black-crowned Night-Herons on Middle Island, which is the one with the cormorant nesting structures. Directions: From the Hamilton-bound QEW lanes in Burlington, take the Eastport Drive exit and proceed along the harbour until you are opposite the mentioned islands. You can park on the shoulder and view from here with a scope. Or, for a safer view away from the traffic, continue to the stoplight and turn right into the CCIW and park in the first lot past the bend. Walk back along the shoreline trail to the lookout mound which is right opposite the island where the bird was. Rob Dobos Dundas, Ont. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
