Driving west on Route 20 in Quebec and the 401 in the mid-afternoon of
Saturday, March 18, I saw what must have been tens of thousands of Snow Geese
and possibly a hundred thousand Canada Geese in the area from just east of
Coteau-du-lac, Quebec, to west of Cornwall, Ontario. In many areas, six or more
huge flocks, each containing hundreds of geese, and at least a dozen smaller
flocks, were visible over both the southern and northern horizon. Many more
geese were feeding in the fields. There was even a dead Snow Goose on the side
of the highway.
In addition, I saw a flock of crows which must have included several hundred
individuals.

While driving me back to St. Catharines after a trip to Long Point today
(sandhill cranes, no Eurasian wigeon) my friend Karl Dix spotted a chukar on
the shoulder of Victoria Ave. (Regional Road 24) at about 4:20 p.m.

Whatever the status of this bird, it was a lifer for each of us.

Directions: Victoria Ave. runs south from Queen Elizabeth Way at Vineland.
The chukar was seen on the east shoulder, south of Metler Rd, just south of
#1791 on a mail box.

Checking the area east of Lancaster Sunday proved to be very fruitful.
Greater Snow Geese had largely left the area along the waterfront and were
heading to points north and northwest. Steady flocks of hundreds were
visible, intermingled with equally impressive flocks of Canadas. Many of
the birds were in transit to their next stop but a few good-sized flocks
put down in corn fields for short periods. Two of these distinct flocks of
Snow Geese numbered in the low thousands. At one point you could look in
any direction with a horizon of about 4 km and see various-sized flocks of
Snows and Canadas as far as the eye could see. The largest flocks were of
Snow Geese. Breathtaking.

Heading west along Hwy 2 near Summerstown there was an imm Bald Eagle on
the ice and an adult perched at a distance.

Exit the 401 at Lancaster and head along the South Service Road which
parallels the hwy. A few km down there were mainly Canadas and a few Snow
Geese in cornfields right along the road.
At the Westley Road overpass head north and check fields for the next 5 km.
For the next few days there may be continued good action further east along
the 401 into Quebec as well before the birds move on. It is early for this
number of birds.
