Hello Ontbirders
Rob Miller, John Nishikawa, Kevin Seymour and I were among the many who saw
the SAGE THRASHER today. It was still present when we left it about noon.
High winds made conditions difficult for photography, but I was able to get
a few documentary photos. I have uploaded 2 photos to the OFO photo page.

Directions thanks to John Black:
To reach the eastern Port Weller pier you need to get to the Seaway Haulage
Road on the east side of the canal north of Lock 1.
Take the Niagara Street exit off the QEW and follow Niagara Street north to
Lakeshore Road where it ends. Turn right on Lakeshore Road and follow
Lakeshore until you cross the canal and then immediately turn left onto
Broadway Ave. Follow Broadway for about 0.5 km until it is intersected by a
dirt road (Seaway Haulage Road ) . Bear left on the dirt road which takes
you alongside the canal. You will reach a yellow gated barrier
Park well back from the barrier and walk out to the north end of the pier
(about 1.7 km). There are often people walking their dogs on this
road. The pier is L-shaped. At the north end of the road (just past the
end of the trees on right) turn right and walk out toward the beacon at
the extreme east end of the pier. The bird was hopping on and off the dirt
road at several locations between about half way to the beacon (just near
the end of the trees on the right of the road) and 50 meters from the
beacon. As we walked the road the bird flew around us on several occasions
and landed back on the road or just off it. It also perched in small trees
after a few of these flights.
Good birding

Today, February 25th, 2006, at about 17:30 there was a juvenile dark morph
Gyrfalcon sitting on the ice just west of the Sault Edison Building, MI. I
watched the bird for about five minutes. The bird then flew and landed on the
east end of the Sault Edison Building for about ten minutes, then flew west
over the St. Mary's River and out of sight. After spending hours in the cold
waiting to see this bird I realize it was all worth while.
Happy Birding,
Mitchell Grant

On the way back from the Sage Thrasher, between 11:30 and 12:30, I
walked back following a path along the extreme eastern edge of the
eastern Pt. Weller pier and had the following sightings:
1 Horned Grebe
24 Tundra Swans flying westward (and making very tough headway)
1 Glaucous Gull (adult)
1 presumed Nelson's Gull (third winter)
The Gulls were resting on the ice near the marina.

Thursday night, I saw an Immature Snowy Owl on Brownlee Rd, between Eagleson
and Shea Rd, on top of a Hydro pole, from 5:30 to 6:00 pm. A lone Horned
Lark was seen on Eagleson just before turning off on Brownlee beforehand.
The Great Grey Owl was not observed on Giroux street near the Lafarge
quarry; several birdwatchers vainly waited for almost 2 hours.
Saturday morning, there was no sign of the GGO at that spot neither. But
roaming around allowed me to see an immature Snowy Owl standing on a field
on French Hill Rd (North side), between Frank Kenny Rd and O'Toole; it was
past 7:45 a.m. It stood there approximately 20 minutes, and flew off to the
field directly south, in a depression that hid it from the road. More
roaming allowed the sighting of a beautiful all white male Snowy, on a field
on Regimbald Rd, directly south of the previous bird, on the North side of
the road. It was standing on a hump in the field, around 200 m from the
road. Its white silhouette was betrayed by dark trees in the horizon. It
could be seen with binoculars, but the spotting scope was best. The wind
was strong and steady, making the experience very cold, but worth it. A
single Horned Lark was seen in the vicinity, on the roadside. Two Common
Ravens were doing aerobatics over a woodlot south of the Regimbald Rd
sighting.
To get to Brownlee Rd from Ottawa: take the 417 West to Kanata. Exit on
Eagleson Rd (#138) south for about 10 km. Brownlee is on the West side.
To get to Regimbald and French Hill Rd from Ottawa: Take the 417 East, exit
on Innes Rd (#112), head east for about 10 km on Innes, turn right on Frank
Kenny. French Hill Rd and Regimbald are the next 2 roads on your left.
Have fun birding!
