A bitterly c-c-cold Feb.18 afternoon in south Whitby-- shortly after 3pm I
witnessed 5 raptors in the air at once over the fields around the Sobey
Warehouses north of Victoria St. There were 3 Red-taileds, 1 N.Harrier and an
unexpected light morph Rough-legged Hawk, the latter hovering over the field
before moving along right over my head. An Am.Kestrel, all the while, was
perched on a hydro line nearby.

Hall's Rd. was "quiet" in the morning-- I did see 3 Red-winged Blackbirds and a
N.Harrier.

The male Wood Duck was seen again in Pringle Creek, just to the east of Brock
St., Whitby.

The Sobey's Warehouses are to the immediate west of the Iroquois Sports
Complex, the latter being at Henry and Victoria Sts. in southwest Whitby.

Hi Birders,

Today, 18 Feb, between 5:45 and 6:10 PM I watched a Great Gray Owl actively
hunting over the DND (National Defence) property to the east side of March
Valley Road about 800 metres past the intersection with Klondike Road. All I
could hear as darkness fell were cracking sounds from the snow/ice cover on
the fields that resulted from Friday's freezing rain and snow. The owl flew
frequently between perches, but I never saw it try for prey.

Directions: Take the Queensway west from Ottawa or the highway 416
interchange to exit 138. Go north (right) on March Road and turn right on
Herzberg Road. Follow Herzberg north across Carling Avenue to the Marshes
Golf Course clubhouse (on the right) and turn right on March Valley Road.
Follow March Valley Road, which swings left in a north west direction, past
Klondike Road.
