Whilst searching for the ivory gull today(with no luck), Jan 11, Martin Blagdurn and I had a great look at an adult northern shrike along the east/west rd comprising the northern boundary of Hillman Marsh. It was perched in a tree near the small gravel lot that accesses the canal. An adult red-shouldered hawk was also seen in that same location. Other raptors seen in the Hillman Marsh area today: BE, AK, RT, NH, and RL. Mike Fitzpatrick, Mt Clemens, MI

Dear Fellow Birders,
Sorry for the delay in sending this out but thought it might be note-worthy
anyways. I was down at Long Point yesterday and managed to turn up a few
good birds. One Concession A there was a Winter Wren and two Carolina Wrens
down in the low-lying creek area that is often productive for screech owls.
On Lakeshore Rd there were five Sandhill Cranes foraging in a field near
West 1/4 Line. At Old Cut yesterday and in recent days, Long Point Bird
Observatory, there has been an Eastern Phoebe, up to three Winter Wrens,
White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows, and a Hermit Thrush.
Most surprizing of my visit down to Long Point was on the evening of the
10th I saw a bat fly over the road near St. Williams, no idea on the
species, but amazing to be seeing one in January.
Directions: Exit the 401 near Woodstock and take Hwy 59 down to Long Point.
Near Port Rowan you can take Conc A west a couple of km to where it goes
through a swampy creek area. From 59 take Lakeshore Rd west several km to
West 1/4 Line, however cranes are likely to be foraging in any of the field=
s
in the area. To reach Old Cut follow 59 down towards the provincial park an=
d
make a left just before it onto Old Cut Blvd, and it is a couple blocks dow=
n
on your right. To reach St. Williams turn east on Hwy 24 from Hwy 59 and
follow it to East 1/4 Line and this was the area where the bat was seen.

Hi All

I just got to my phone messages from this afternoon and the Ivory Gull =
was
relocated this afternoon around 3:15 pm.

It was found at Wheatley Harbour, on the beach at the end of the new br=
eak
wall.

Wheatley Harbour is located at the end of County Road 1 (Kent/Essex
border). To reach this part of the Harbour, turn right on Deer Run Roa=
d
(the last street on the right before the Lake), cross over Muddy Creek =
and
then take the first road to the left (just past the MNR office), this w=
ill
lead you to the harbour.

Be aware that they have been doing work on the breakwall and boat launc=
h
and there is heavy machinery moving in and out of the harbour.

Good luck and good birding! I will post and update again tomorrow
afternoon.

Sarah
