While birding the Holiday Beach area today me and my brother had 3 Turkey
Vultures fly by directly over the restaurant Ducks On The Roof heading east
on Highway 20 or old highway 18 as most of us remember it .

13 birders traversed the snowy roads north of Peterborough today in
only 4 vehicles (good car-pooling !) and found less than 30 species
   but some interesting ones.
Best find was a Gray Jay at a feeder at #945 Road # 504 east of
Apsley. On Jack Lake Rd. in Apsley, we could not locate the Pine
Grosbeaks seen Friday but did discover a flock of Evening Grosbeaks
and a group of Common Redpolls, both visiting feeders.
On Sandy Lake Road, 2 Bald Eagles and several Ravens were seen. A
single Snow Bunting north of Apsley, 5 Robins, a Belted Kingfisher on
the Otonabee River, and an adult Northern Goshawk on Division Road,
were other good sightings. Waterbirds included many Common Goldeneye,
2 Mute Swans, and several Common Mergansers.
We could not relocate the flock of 140 Bohemian Waxwings seen
yesterday at the Indian River on Division Rd.
Many thanks to Jerry Ball for his expert leadership on this trip.

Following Ron Fleming's report of Snowy Owls in Holland Marsh, a quick =
trip today resulted in finding one immature bird on Tornado Drive south =
of Canal Road. I also received second-hand information of a second bird =
off Day Road but this one eluded me.

And from Dufferin just north of Pumphouse Rd I found what for me quite =
easily was the largest flock of Snow Buntings that I have ever come =
across. I conservatively estimated 500 birds but 1000 might not be out =
of the question. These birds were all in one massive grouping feeding in =
low weeds in the east of Dufferin.

Directions:

Tornado Drive is located running southerly off Canal Rd. and is the =
second road east of where Canal Rd passes under the 400 highway. Canal =
Road is the first turnoff to the east from the 400 highway north of Hwy =
9.

Many birders were out on a glorious January 1 day--the snowy scenery =
along the country roads of north Pickering and Whitby was magnificent. I =
saw 12 Snow Buntings among feeding cows at a farm along Scugog county =
road 6, east of Lakeridge Rd. (hy.23)--this county road is the next =
north of Durham hy.21.

In Pringle Creek and Whitby Harbour-- many Scaup, several Redheads, =
Goldeneyes and 2 Trumpeter Swans, among other waterfowl. To the east of =
the Brock St. bridge were 2 Great Blue Herons.

Hall's Rd. --swamp sparrow, song sparrows, Northern Shrike, Hairy =
Woodpecker among others.

The escapee Harris's Hawk that has been cared for by several Ajax =
neighbours over the past 10 or more days has been retrieved by its =
owner. He did provide great entertainment for the residents and several =
birders as he roosted in a nearby pine tree, coming down to feed on =
provided hamburg, while I eventually tracked down its owner.

Pine Warbler & Northern Goshawk in Shell Park (Oakville) Jan 1

On January 1 Mark Cranford and I saw the Pine Warbler in Shell park just
north of the garden plots. Shortly afterwards we saw a juvenile Northern
Goshawk along the pipeline right of way leading to Bronte Woods. In Bronte
Woods we saw a Brown Creeper with both nuthatches.

Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Road and go south to Lakeshore then
turn right. Shell Park is about 1 km west on the north side of the road.
