This afternoon while out walking at the Valley Inn, I came across an Ovenbird
feeding with American Tree Sparrows,
White-throated Sparrows, Juncos etc. feeding at the bottom of the hill at the
RBG property known as Cherry Hill Gate on
Plains Road just across from Louie's Restaraurant.

Just park in the lot and proceed down the hill to the bottom, there is a
garbage can tied to a stump, the bird was
feeding here as well as a stump next to a large evergreen which has fallen
down. A further walk down this trail will
lead you to the boardwalk in the Hendrie Valley. There is a Gray Catbird which
has wintered at this location for the
past couple of years and is back again. A Fox Sparrow was also feeding on seed
at this location. For those of you more
familiar with entering at the bottom of the Valley Inn Road, proceed to the
boardwalk area and continue to the end of
the boardwalk, take the right hand fork of the path at the end of the boardwalk
and this will lead you to the fence
where the Ovenbird was seen near the garbage can.

Directions:

Take 403 Hamilton to Hwy 6 North. Follow the signs to Plains Road. Turn East
toward the RBG main centre and across
from Louies Grill is the Cherry Hill Gate. It is well marked. Proceed down
the hill from the lot to the bottom.

Cheers,
Cheryl Edgecombe

winter ontbirders,

Despite yesterday's cold and today's snowstorm at least one BARN
SWALLOW (maybe still three) continues to be seen at the water
treatment facility behind the Dupont plant in Kingston. As they spend
time below the level that can be observed from the road, detailed
directions may be helpful which could be e-mailed to anyone
interested. Hard to believe but insects must still be hatching from
the warm water there. One can find 40 Gadwall, 5 Coots, 3 Wigeon, and
50 Redheads, among the waterfowl in the adjacent Cataraqui Bay.

In case any readers are from Toronto, the Kingston being referred to
is in south-eastern Ontario. Exit #611 south from highway 401 and
follow Gardiners Rd (6) to Bath Rd, jog right to Days Rd (17) ,
continue south to Front Road and turn east. The entry to Dupont Plant
lagoon is south off Front Road just before (west of) of the bridge
over the Little Cataraqui Creek.

Paul and /or Nittaya Mackenzie,
Kingston, Canada.
