An adult Tundra Swan with an all black bill was seen today (Dec. 3, 2005) at
the Moodie Drive Quarry Ponds, south of Ottawa. It was resting on the ice with
a couple thousand Canada Geese. The quarry pond had only small patches of open
water, but the corn fields around the area are still popular feeding spots, so
this pond is still being used as a resting area.

Directions from NeilyWorld's Birding Ottawa website: From Highway 416 take exit
66 (Fallowfield Road). If southbound, a 0.4 km offramp dumps onto Fallowfield,
where you will turn right or west. If northbound, the 0.4 km offramp brings you
to Fallowfield, where you will turn left or west onto it and in 0.5 km join the
southbound offramp traffic. Both groups will now follow Fallowfield Road west
for an additional 0.4 km to reach Moodie Drive. Turn left or southeast onto
Moodie Drive and go 5.3 km, passing Cambrian Road to reach the Burnside Pits
(large pond is at the second gate on the left). Park along the side of the road
without blocking the access.

Hi everyone. This message is intended mainly for Ottawa birders who
might be braving the cold to do a winter list.

This afternoon, December 3, I checked a few spots East of Ottawa.

At 6573 Russell Rd, just East of Carlsbag Springs, there were 5 or 6
Brown-headed Cowbirds and a Red-winged Blackbird at a popular feeding
station.

Directions: from Ottawa, take the 417 East and exit at Boundary Rd., go
North towards Carlsbag Springs; at Carlsbag Springs turn right (East)
and drive a few 100 meters; the feeders are in front of the house at
6573.

On Giroux Rd, a Great-Blue Heron was fighting the winds, and winning
slowly, at a pond at the quarry.

Directions: from Ottawa, take the 417 East and exit at Boundary Rd., go
North towards Carlsbag Springs; at Carlsbag Springs turn right (East)
and drive a few kilometers and turn left on Frank Kenney; drive to
Giroux and turn right. The GBHE was seen on the right on the top of the
hill. You can also reach Frank Kenney from Innis Rd, but there is road
construction and driving is very slow.

Good birding and good winter listing.

Langis Sirois, Ottawa
