HI Birders,
This morning (Sat.) I started at Point Edward on Lake Huron and worked down
the St. Clair River. The most notable bird was a RED-THROATED LOON along
the shoreline just south of Lambton Generating Station. This was at Seager
Park. Strange as it may seem, I have never seen one on the St. Clair River,
and this is the first one in the area this season for me.
At Point Edward, a few RED-NECKED GREBES were present (up to five). A
couple were in US waters.
There were also a couple of HORNED GREBES.
At Sarnia Bay, a first basic GLAUCOUS GULL was present, and has been for a
few days. That is the only one I have seen so far this fall.
At Lambton Generating Station, there are several hundred gull (99% Herring).
I did catch a look at an adult THAYER'S GULL there. This could possibly be
the same one that was at Point Edward on Thursday. There, Tim Snieder and I
had great looks at one as it passed back and forth in front of us for almost
half an hour just before noon. At times, it was just beyond the hood of my
car! The Point Edward one did enter US side at times.
At Cathcart Park north of Sombra, a CACKLING GOOSE was among many Canada
Geese.
At the north end of the village of Port Lambton, I encountered another
RED-NECKED GREBE very close to shore.
All in all, a decent day for early in the season.
Directions to Sombra and St. Clair River: Find Hwy 40 that runs N/S between
Wallaceburg and Sarnia. Turn west on Lambton Rd. 2 (Bentpath Line) and take
to Sombra on the St. Clair River. Fawn Island is just to the south of the
village. The St. Clair Parkway (Rd. 33) follows the river along its length.
