Yesterday afternoon in advance of the major storm-front approaching from
the west I bird Rattray Marsh. At approximately 2:15 pm I found a Ruff
feeding with two Pectoral Sandpipers and large flock of Killdeer on the
southern edge of outflow channel where it meets the mudflats (just sw of the
boardwalk on the knoll trail) and directly off the end of Bexhill Road. The
Ruff and pectorals flushed several times by a Cooper's Hawk in my stay at
the marsh, swirling around the mudflats several times; the trio was last
seen at 3:30 pm feeding on the edge of mudflat just nw off the outflow
channel into L. Ontario. I guess because of the hawk, the ruff was very
tame ... and a times I was with 50-60 feet of the bird ... but unfortunately
no camera!!!!!!!
I visited Townsend's sewage lagoon on tuesday and got some good views of
the Ruff there (a lifer). This Ruff had no signs of the black blotches
present on Townsend's bird ... but rather exhibited a dull mottled gray
breast and sides, consistent with the full winter adult male plumage shown
in Sibley's Bird guide ... obviously another bird. This may represent a
small movement through the area so birders should be on the altert that more
might be seen ... but easily missed when mixed in with small flocks of
yellowlegs which they apparently often socialize with. Good Luck.

Hi There!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I haven't had any confirmed rep=
orts
of Swainson's Hawks sightings, since Wednesday evening. I was sick
yesterday and didn't get out to the site to check for them, though one =
of
my co-workers said someone said they had seen them yesterday. I am goi=
ng
to go and do a more thorough check after work this evening and will pos=
t
again in the event that they are still around. If anyone did see them
yesterday, please send me a private response.

Thanks everyone! and Good Birding
Sarah
