I went down to the sarnia Lighthouse for a few minutes this morning
(Sept 15) just to see what was hopping. Not too much on the north
wind, but there was, to my surprise, a solitary Juv. Sanderling on the
sand right in front of the parking lot. It was very white and crisp,
with a pure white belly and dark shoulders, and a little black
mottling on the wings, but again, mostly a snowy white overall.
Nothing else of note, other than the usual gulls and cormorants.
To get to the lighthouse, follow front street (which is accessible
from 402 exit #1) north through to the end and turn onto victoria.
Follow victoria almost to the ent and turn onto fort street and the
lighthouse in on the end of the street.

Yesterday evening (Sep. 14), a friend of mine was at the Mooney's Bay
sports facility for some fitness training for cross-country skiing. At
dusk, he noticed a Common Nighthawk flying towards him. The bird
actually landed on the ground. After a while, it flew up, and he quickly
lost it in the darkness. Unfortunately, Common Nighthawks have become
anything but common in recent years here in Ottawa.
After a few weeks' absence (or at least of escaping my detection), a
Peregrine Falcon graced the north side of the Coats Building at the
Tunney's Pasture government complex this morning (Sep 15).
The Mooney's Bay sports complex is located on the west side of Riverside
Drive, south of the Riverside and Hog's Back (west)/Brookfield (east)
intersection. The Coats building is the tall tower on the north-east
corner of the Holland and Scott intersection. Both sites are in Ottawa.

Visitors:
Thanks to the very helpful guests we had on the tower today. Your help was
a welcome contribution to a very pleasant day.
Weather:
A relatively low deck of Stratocumulus cloud below a higher deck of
Altostratus kept the skies mostly cloudy today. Winds were out of the NNE
all day.
Raptor Observations:
Fewer Broadwings than expected today with the highlight being 2 kettles of
70+ birds late in the afternoon. These birds appeared after the lower deck
of cloud had dissapated and we suspect that earlier kettles may have been
missed above the Stratocumulus deck. Good numbers of Sharpies early and a
steady trickle of Kestrels all day.
Non-raptor Observations:
The Blue Jay migration got into full swing today with 1355 birds noted
passing the tower. Other migrants were sparse but included Ruby Throated
Hummingbirds, Chimney Swift, Barn and Tree Swallows, a few warblers and
Gold Finches. Common Snipe, Woodcock, Solitary Sandpiper, Green Heron,
Sora, Great Blue Heron and Great Egret were present. A few small flocks
of shorebirds were also seen heading east.
Predictions:
Overcast conditions with the chance of a shower or thunderstorm early.
After 8:00 o'clock overcast with rain continuing on and off through the
day. Winds are forcast to be NE at 10 mph early backing to NNE by mid
morning. The temperature will remain in the high teens.
