Hi All, The immature Franklin's Gull was present again this evening, Sept. 13, 2005, off the SW tip of Bate Island, off the Champlain Bridge in Ottawa, ON. This is its 4th day here, unusually long-staying for this species in Ottawa. Directions from the above link at NeilyWorld are as follows: From Highway 417 (The Queensway) take exit 123 (Island Park Drive) if travelling west, or exit 124 (Carling Avenue) if driving east. Using the Carling exit requires a bit of manouvring. Immediately upon exiting, in 250 metres, you will merge with Carling Avenue. As left turns are prohibited onto Merivale Road, which joins Island Park Drive, you will want to cross the traffic lanes and turn left onto Kirkwood Avenue and have only another scant 250 metres in which to do it. Be careful! Avoid rush hours, traffic can slow to a crawl, especially crossing the bridge to Quebec. Go NNW on Kirkwood for 1.2 km and turn right on Byron Avenue. Proceed 0.4 km ENE on Byron to the traffic light at Island Park Drive. Here you will join the route of those travelling west on the 417, who had only to exit onto Island Park Drive and go 0.9 km NNW along it to reach Byron. From Byron and Island Park continue NW along Island Park to the Champlain Bridge and part way across it, making a righthand turn onto Bate Island, 2.0 km from Byron Avenue. Cheers, Larry

By comparison, the same locations produced 162 species at the 2001 convention (September 29 and 30) and 156 species at the 2003 convention (September 20 and 21). Of particular interest to the 204 registered convention participants were: Ross's Goose (at Jack Miner's, but not included in the species' total due to concern about wild status), Western Sandpiper (3), Buff-breasted Sandpiper (about 15 in onion fields), Red Phalarope (2), jaeger sp., Little Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull (3), and Sabine's Gull. Once again, on behalf of the OFO Board of Directors, I would like to thank all the trip leaders for their exceptional efforts to find birds and butterflies in very HOT weather: Allen Chartier, Bob Curry, Dave Don, Karl Konze, Dave Milsom, Henrietta O'Neill, Todd Pepper, Pete Read, and Alan Wormington. Thanks also to others who spotted birds and shared their expertise and telescopes, especially Jean Iron. It was a wonderful weekend! Ron Tozer 2005 OFO Convention Field Trip Leader Dwight, Ontario
