Hi All,

Coming home from work tonight, I drove past Muddy Creek wetlands across from
the Omstead Plant in Wheatley.

There were 34 Great Egrets, 17 Great Blue Herons, two green herons and four
Black-crowned Night Herons wading the shallows. There was also a flock of
30+ shore birds lift off from the flats near the road, but I didn't get a
good look at them.

Most of the egrets were in the water, so I couldn't see any bands.

Also a loose flock of 10 Common Nighthawks over the house just at dusk.

To get to Muddy Creek - From the lights in Wheatley, head south along County
Road #1, and turn right onto Deer Run Road. The wetlands are to the north
of the road. Watch for Tomato wagons as the harvest is in full swing now.

We spent a few hours on September 1 at Port Bruce and Port Burwell on Lake
Erie in Elgin County watching for storm waifs - none found. On the beach
at Port Burwell Provincial Park were 10 Little Gulls (2 adult, 6 subadults,
2 spectacular juveniles) amongst 100+ Common Terns, and 250+ Bonaparte's
Gulls. Also, present was the first adult Great Black-backed Gull we've
seen this fall.
We see Little Gulls annually at Port Burwell and Port Bruce from mid
July through to mid October, sometimes in numbers. Other counts of over
10 birds on Port Burwell beach include 14 birds on July 19 2001 and 10
birds on August 4, 2003. High counts at Port Bruce of birds flying by or
fishing off the Catfish Creek mouth are 6 on September 14, 1996 and 9 on
October 4, 2002.

Other interesting sightings were record early American Pipits at Port Bruce
(1 on August 31 and 1 on September 1). We heard both birds giving the two
note 'pipit flight call" as they went over but dismissed it as something
else until the Sept 1 bird landed in front of us on the beach. The earliest
previous fall record for Elgin County was September 16.

Port Burwell is on Lake Erie at the east end of Elgin County about 20 km
south of Tillsonburg. The provincial park is on the west side of Otter
Creek which empties into Lake Erie at Port Burwell. Hwy 19 is one way of
getting to Port Burwell from Hwy 401.
