At 0705 to 733 an adult Sooty Tern flew past the Long Point Provincial Park 1km west of the park boundary. The bird was originally spotted by Mike Boyd about 500m off shore heading west. It was followed by myself, Mike and Ross Wood as it continued west for a few kilometers then it began heading east until it was lost over the lake. It was viewed between 500m and 2km offshore.
Other interesting species included up to 5 Long-tailed Jaegers (2 adult, others unknown) working there way back and forth along the lake between 0645 and 0830. One Parasitic was also spotted. Other species noted were - Black-bellied Plover - 19 Am. Golden Plover - 6 Semi-P Plover - 2 Whimbrel - 1 Sanderling - 40 Ruddy Turnstone - 5 Semi-P Sand - 3 Merlin Common Tern - 200 Forsters Tern - 4 Caspian - 17 Common Loon - 5 and the usual gulls... Heading back to the shoreline - good hurricaning. P.S. They were resting and feeding just west of the dyke, likely brought down by the heavy rains and wind associated with the trail end of the hurricane. Other shorebirds noted between Shirley's Bay and Britannia Pier were 3 ad. Ruddy Turnstone, 22 Black-bellied Plover, 46 Semipalmated Plover, 36 Pectoral Sandpiper, 1 Baird's Sandpiper and 1 Stilt Sandpiper. heading back out, good birding Bruce Bruce Di Labio 400 Donald B. Turn right (north) on Rifle Rd. Park at the lot at the end (boat launch). Walk back to the road, and continue through the gate on the Department of National Defence property. There is a trail on your right (clearly marked with vehicle "No Entry" signs) which heads into the woods, and, eventually to the dyke. **** PLEASE NOTE**** YOU MUST OBTAIN PERMISSION FROM THE RANGE CONTROL OFFICE BEFORE ENTERING THE DYKE AREA-- Call (613) 991-5740 and request permission to visit the dyke area for birding.
