While camping at Awenda Provincial Park this week, we took our binoculars down to the Beaver Pond Trail on Wednesday August 10 and heard an Olive Sided Flycatcher, quite visible in the top of the dead trees in the middle of the trail circle, and actively catching insects. Most of the time it wasn't very vocal, but we could clearly see its white rump as he preened its feathers.
Other birds seen (in faded, but recognizable plumage) included american redstart, blackthroated blue warbler, blackburnian warbler, blackthroated green warbler, scarlet tanager (yellow plumage), northern orioles, hairy woodpecker, many yellow-bellied sapsuckers, and a female common merganser with 13 young in tow at Beach 1. Awenda Provincial Park is located in Penetanguishene, follow Hwy 93 to Robert Street and turn left, then follow the signs to the park. Beaver Pond Trail is located in the day use area. Proceed to the very last parking lot, then Beaver Pond Trail is on the left between the parking lot and Georgian Bay. Jack Walker, Stouffville.
