Yesterday I was retrieving my car from the economy lot of the Park and Fly at
626 Dixon Road (beside Radisson Suites) when I heard the mockingbird flying
over the parking lot. The cashier looked a little puzzled as I ran off to see
the bird before paying. It landed atop a hydro pole directly across the street
from the payment booth. It was doing an amazing array of imitations including
gull, starling, and cricket! It was also doing an interesting one metre
hop/flap then landing in the same place every once-in-a-while. It was still
there when I left after 10 min. of observing.

Today, July 31, Kevin McLaughlin and I birded two shorebird hotspots -
Townsend Lagoons and Rock Point on Lake Erie.

The Townsend Lagoons have excellent shorebird habitat. Our best bird was a
molting adult Long-billed Dowitcher. It also was seen by Bob Curry, Glenda
Slessor, Don Perks, Gerry Guild, Bill Smith, Jim Cram and Phil Walker.
Sorry if I missed anyone. Barry Cherriere headed in to photograph it as we
departed. We had about 14 adult Short-billed Dowitchers (hendersoni
subspecies) and one of the eastern nominate subspecies griseus. We also saw
an adult White-rumped Sandpiper and several Pectoral Sandpipers among the
common species.

Later at Rock Point Provincial Park were saw 3 hendersoni Short-billed
Dowitchers including an unusual individual in molt which also was present
on Thursday. See photos of it
http://jeaniron.ca/Shorebirds/2005/Moltingadulthendersoni.htm

Also at Rock point were 2 adult Baird's Sandpipers, 2 adult Ruddy
Turnstones, 7 molting adult Sanderlings including one suggesting a large
Red-necked Stint! At Rock Point we saw our first juvenile Semipalmated
Sandpiper of the season and one of the few we've ever seen in July. We also
saw several adult Bonaparte's Gulls including our first juvenile of the
year down from the nesting grounds.

Directions: For Townsend Lagoons turn right from Highway 6 to # 69 to
Townsend. Turn left on Keith Richardson Parkway. Go to Concession 14, turn
right and go about 750 m. Lagoons are on your right.

Directions: Rock Point Provincial Park is east of Dunneville. Follow the
signs off Highway 3 or Regional Road 3. From park entrance (fee) go
straight (do not turn left or right) to washrooms on left in campground.
Park there and walk a short distance to the Woodland Trail, follow trail a
short distance watching for a trail and stairs on your left down to the
algae covered flat rock beach.

Yesterday at Hillman marsh Dean Ware found a record early adult Western
Sandpiper at Hillman marsh. Alan Wormington said it's the first fall record
for an adult bird. The bird is moulting.

Hillman is 5 km north of Hillman.
