OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - THURSDAY JUL 28 2005 AT 8:30 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A welcome break in the prolonged heat wave and increased post-
breeding bird activity has provided some relief from the summer
birding doldrums.

At Shirley's Bay on July 23rd, there were at least 3 GREAT EGRETS
and at least 30 Common Terns. On the 27th there were 3 Black-
crowned Night-Herons and 8 Green Herons, 9 species of shorebirds
including 3 juvenile Least Sandpipers, and several warbler species
on the move including Tennessee, Nashville, Chestnut-sided, Bay-
breasted, Black-and-white, and Northern Waterthrush. For
permission to access the Shirley's Bay causeway please call the
Range Control office at (613) 991-5740.

Two Black-crowned Night-herons were also reported from Mud Lake in
Britannia back on the 19th, and a juvenile Black-crowned Night-
Heron was fishing in Stillwater Creek at the west end of Andrew
Haydon Park on the 28th. Also at the west end of Andrew Haydon
Park on the 28th there were a few shorebirds including Lesser
Yellowlegs, Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers, as well as 2 adult
Soras with 4 fledged young. On the 26th, at the east end of
Andrew Haydon (aka "Ottawa Beach") there was an adult Baird's
Sandpiper, the first local report of the season.

At least one adult Caspian Tern seems to have been hanging around
the Ottawa River throughout the month of July - the most recent
reports were from "Ottawa Beach" on the 20th and 26th, and from
the Deschenes rapids on the 27th.

In other reports of interest...nesting Merlins, some with fledged
young, were noted from various locations including the Civic
Hospital and Westboro areas, as well as Lac Philippe in Gatineau
Park, a COMMON NIGHTHAWK was heard in Centretown on the evening of
the 26th, and on the 24th an adult Red-headed Woodpecker was seen
northwest of Pakenham, at the junction of Shaw Rd. and North
Pakenham Concession 12.

Thank you - Good Birding!
