This message to promote a nonfiction feature film, "The Wild Parrots of
Telegraph Hill", has been approved by the Coordinator.
"I'm standing on the front deck of an old cottage on San Francisco's
Telegraph Hill ... In my left hand, I'm holding a cup filled with sunflower
seeds ... There are parrots on my right hand, on my shoulders and on my head
... In all, I'm surrounded by more than fifty parrots ... A group of
tourists, their faces lit with fascination, stop to stare. The squawking is
getting so loud that one of the tourists has to shout his question, 'Don't
you ever lose any?'
'They're not mine,' I shout back, laughing. 'They're wild.'
'Wild? Are you serious? Wild parrots in San Francisco?'
... The parrots continue to scream as they fly on stiff, frantic wings
through a gap in a row of trees and disappear from view.
Yes. Wild parrots in San Francisco!"
This excerpt from Mark Bittner's book sets the scene for Judy Irving's film
of the same name. Judy is a Sundance Film Festival and Emmy Award-winning
filmmaker who is bringing "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" to Toronto on
July 15th.
Romance, comedy and a SURPRISE ending is in store for Ontario's keen
birders. What makes this an EVENT is that I can offer up to 40 free PASSES
to the film's PRESS SCREENING on July 7th, following which, Mark Bittner
himself will answer questions and 40 lucky birders will enjoy an opportunity
to socialize.
Please check out www.wildparrotsfilm.com .
You'll discover that the species in question, Aratinga erythrogenys, is, in
fact, not a parrot but, rather, a RED-MASKED PARAKEET, native to South-west
Ecuador and North-west Peru.
To have your name(s) entered in a draw (several double passes are available
too), please express your interest in attending the 7 PM, July 7th film
event by submitting an email directly to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
To all birders, I urge you to enjoy this film when it is showing in your
community. The Toronto release is July 15th.
HAPPY CANADA DAY!
