A few interesting reports this past week, considering this is a very "slow" time of year for birding in the Ottawa area. This morning, June 26, a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was heard and well- seen at Shirley's Bay, in the woods and near the base of the causeway. For permission to access the causeway, please call the Range Control Office at (613) 991-5740. Another unusual report for this time of year in Ottawa was of an adult Red-necked Grebe on the Ottawa River near Lemieux Island on the 22nd. An immature Night-Heron species was also seen on the evening of the 22nd at Bruce Pit on Cedarview Rd. An unusual location for a pair of Gadwall at this time of year was the large pond on the east side of Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. on June 19th, and there were also many Pied-billed Grebes, 9 Ruddy Ducks and 3 Common Terns here the same day. A Lesser Yellowlegs was seen at the Almonte sewage lagoons on the 22nd, but otherwise there have been no notable shorebird reports. The Great Horned Owlet in the Britannia woods is now huge and flying quite well on its own, but is still being attended by its parents. Unfortunately, one of the downtown Peregrine Falcon offspring seems to have gone astray - the young male of the two fledglings has not been seen since the 21st, although the young female appears to be doing very well. Otherwise, a Common Nighthawk flying over the Carlington area on the evenings of both June 24th and 25th was the only other noteworthy report. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer! Thank you - Good Birding! - End transcript
