OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - JUN 06 2005 AT 8:30 AM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

There were several highlights in the Ottawa-Gatineau area during
the past week.

Among the 16 species of warblers reported from Gatineau Park,
there was a singing male LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH and a singing male
CERULEAN WARBLER on territory on June 4th. The LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH was at the same location where a male was present last
year, at the stream along the Water Fall Trail below the Mackenzie
King estate - it was seen and heard again on the morning of the
5th. The CERULEAN WARBLER was along the Gatineau Parkway below the
Etienne Brule Lookout. Another Cerulean was heard along Trail #2
north of the Champlain Lookout, and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER
was heard in the same vicinity as well but was most likely a
transient migrant.

The 1st local reports of LEAST BITTERNS came from the Constance
Creek wetland along the Thomas Dolan Parkway on May 31st, and the
Marais aux Grenouillettes west of Masson, Quebec, on June 2nd.
Single Great Egrets were seen flying over Huntmar Dr. southeast of
Carp on May 28th, and also over the Britannia area on June 5th. A
pair of Gadwall, a male Redhead and 8 Ruddy Ducks were at the
large pond on the east side of Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. on
June 5th, 5 extremely late Snow Geese were seen from the Champlain
bridge near the Quebec side on the 4th, 19 Brant flew over the
Marais aux Grenouillettes on the 5th, and a Sandhill Crane was
reported flying over Pineglade Cr. in Orleans on the 3rd. An
immature Bonaparte's Gull and a 2nd-summer Lesser Black-backed
Gull were at Deschenes rapids of the Ottawa River on the 4th.
Several Bonaparte's Gulls were on the river at Britannia on the
5th, 3 ARCTIC TERNS were seen here on the 28th, and at least 10
Black Terns were at Marais aux Grenouillettes on the 5th. Single
Black Terns were also noted at the Embrun sewage lagoons and on
the Ottawa River at Britannia the same day.

Shorebirds were generally unremarkable - however, at the Moodie
Dr. pond on June 5th there were approx. a half-dozen Black-bellied
Plovers, a few Semipalmated Plovers and approx. a dozen
Semipalmated Sandpipers, and on the same day there were 1 White-
rumped Sandpiper, 2 Dunlin and several Wilson's Phalaropes at the
Embrun sewage lagoons.

A Sedge Wren was seen and heard on the morning of the 5th along
the driveway near the ditch immediately north of the entrance to
the trail to the Marais aux Grenouillettes. At least 3 Sedge Wrens
were found at the marsh beside the Nepean Equestrian Park at
Moodie and Corkstown Rds. on the 3rd. Another flight of late
migrating thrushes was noted on the evening of May 31st including
approx. 15 Swainson's and at least 1 Gray-cheeked Thrush.

And finally, volunteers are needed for this year's Peregrine
Falcon Watch, which will begin at 6:00 AM on Saturday June 11th.
Please contact Falcon Watch Coordinator Eve Ticknor at (613) 737-
7551, e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], or Volunteer Coordinator Marie
