Some highlights from the weekend in Presqu'ile: SEDGE WREN - singing male at the Owen Point Trail parking lot. Refound on Sunday by Chris Robinson.
BLUE-WINGED WARBLER - at least one on sat, one on sun (picnic ground across from Bird Sightings Board) YELLOW-THROATED VIREO - one male, Bluffs Campground, site #6 (sunday). BRANT - approx. 200 off the lighthouse on saturday, maybe 50 on the island off Owen Point on sunday. CLAY-COLORED SPARROW - apparently seven birds seen over the weekend - we saw two in the Owen Point area. Also reported from Calf Pasture. More precise directions are available from the sightings binder at the Bird Sightings Board. Eight species were seen including SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER (15), GREATER (20) & LESSER YELLOWLEGS (95), SOLITARY SANDPIPER (3) and LEAST SANDPIPER (200). The 6 species of waterfowl observed included 2 white GREATER SNOW GOOSE. Eight species of shorebirds were also observed at Alfred. The same 5 species listed above for Maxville were here but only one of each except for 5 LEAST SANDPIPERS. A male and female WILSON'S PHALAROPE were also present. Fifteen species of waterbirds were observed at Alfred including PIED-BILLED GREBE (1), REDHEAD (12), RING-NECKED DUCK (2), LESSER SCAUP (7), RUDDY DUCK (54 including 35 males) and AMERICAN COOT (5). The first family of MALLARDS (10 ducklings) was also seen. Maxville and Alfred each had one BONEPARTE'S GULL DIRECTIONS TO MAXVILLE LAGOONS: From highway 417 take exit 51 then turn south towards Maxville. Go about 2 km then turn right (west) on Athol road. Drive just under 1 km then turn left (south) on dirt road just before white house (# 18102). Lagoons are at the end of the dirt road. DIRECTIONS TO ALFRED LAGOONS: From the town of Alfred go southeast on Highway 17, then turn south on Peat Moss Road and drive for 2 km. The lagoons are on your left (east side of road).
