20 intrepid OFO members birded Minesing Swamp near Angus today.
Weather was better than expected with periods of drizzle failing to
dampen participants' spirits. Much of the area covered was still in
flood.
63 species were found. Highlights: 200 Rusty Blackbirds, 400
Northern Pintail, large numbers of Teal (both species), Wood Duck,
Shoveler, Mallard, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck; a pair of
Sandhill Cranes, Rough-legged Hawk, Wild Turkey, Ruffed Grouse, Winter
Wren, Eastern Bluebird, Caspian Tern, Purple Finch, and Brown Creeper.
There were also good numbers of Eastern Meadowlarks, Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs.

birders,
This afternoon about 4pm Paul Carter, Adam Pinch and myself found a very odd
Aythya cross. The duck was located with a 100 or so Scaup along the west
side of the tip.
I pressume the duck was male. With this said, the mantle colour was of a
dark gray/brown, the flanks were the colour of a Ring-necked Duck or
Ferruginous duck. The Breast was of a reddish brown like Mallard. At the
distance we were observing the bird seemed to have a small buffy forehead
like that of a Eurasian Wigeon. the face pattern was odd, it was dark with
some amount of whitish or some light colour in a pattern that was lighter
around the neck and cheek area. the bill was bluish like a scaup but was
longer and thinner. the wing pattern was like that of a Tufted Duck with
white extending though the primaries. The wing seemed small for the bird.
the overall shape of the body was very round like oldsquaw. the head was
small for the body and had a rough almost tufted appearence. the cross was
smaller than the Greater Scaup next to it although not by much.
I plan on looking for it again on Sunday but if any one should see it please
if you could take some digital pics of this bird it would be much
appreciated.
As for a guess... I have none. I have met my match with this one!
I did take a few pics but they are far, fuzzy and it was sleeping! awh!
