Durham Region advised me that they have the lagoon access permits ready to purchase. Same deal as last year - $5.00 for the permit - available only at the Waste Transfer Station near Port Perry. Please be advised that everyone who enters must have their own permit - no sharing allowed as they are designed to address individual liability and safety. Durham Region remains sensitive about this issue and will be policing the site periodically. Our entry to the site is based on their good graces only.
To obtain a permit, you must go in person [no proxies] to the Port Perry Waste Transfer Station, located at 1623 Reach Road, Port Perry. Go north of town on Hwy 12, to Regional Rd 8 [= Reach Road] and turn right [east] to the Transfer Station [on your left]. Stop at the gatehouse and you can buy your permit from Tuesday to Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 4 p.m. only. 905-985-7973. To reach the lagoons from here, back track to Hwy 12 and go north to the next street Concession 8 [don't be confused by the similarity in the names - it is a different road than Regional Road 8] and go east and follow it over a bridge and past a chain link fence to the second gate on your right. The lock box to enter the lagoons is located at this gate. Good luck and enjoy the lagoons! The viewing conditions on Lake Ontario and both Popham and Presqu'ile Bay were excellent. Highlights included 21 Red-throated Loon (still in winter plumage), mainly in Popham Bay, 63 Common Loon mostly off Lighthouse Lane, 109 Red-necked Grebe, scattered around between the Lighthouse and Beach #1. Also, 3 Surf Scoter & 1 White-winged Scoter off the Lighthouse area and 2500+ Bonaparte's Gull, 3000+ Long-tailed Duck and 1500+ Red-breasted Merganser. Most of these waterbirds were surface feeding on small insects (millions!) that were on the water. Along the Marsh Boardwalk at dusk on April 18th, 6 American Bittern and 6 Virginia Rails were both seen and heard. At least 3 of the bitterns were in full view. At the parking lot, 2 American Woodcock were displaying. On the drive down on April 18th saw a Great Gray Owl hunting at 4:30pm along Hwy.7 near Arden. good birding Bruce Bruce Di Labio 400 Donald B.
