I was able to find the Snowy Egret at around 2:30 PM or shortly past. It
was standing on a rock in Dow's Lake proper (as opposed to the Rideau
Canal), about 50 to 100 metres out from shore, below the Arboretum
centre circle parking lot. From a distance it looked very like the many
Ring-billed Gulls loafing there and I initially cycled right past it
searching for something more distinctly egret-like. It was very quiet
and seemed set for a long stay, but unexpectedly at around 2:45 it
suddenly took flight and turned the corner heading up the canal towards
the locks at Carleton University. It gained altitude but the strong
winds appeared to knock it down. I thought it was going to land, but
lost sight of it. When I got to the area where I'd last seen it I could
not relocate it. I did not look that hard, however, as I was well
satisfied with the looks I'd had.

Note: there are double-crested cormorants on Dow's Lake and Rough-winged
Swallows near the locks.

Theer is a breeding plumage Snowy Egret at Dow's Lake, Ottawa as of 1:10PM
today, Tuesday, April 19. The bird is feeding actively along the short
"upriver" stretch of the canal immediately below the National Arboretum
parking lot.

DIRECTIONS: Dow's Lake is SOUTH of Hwy. 417 at Island Park Drive. The
Arboretum parking lot is at the intersection of Island Park Drive and Prince
of Wales Drive. Park there and walk down the hillside to the canal. OR

with the lake in front of you turn RIGHT onto Prince of Wales. When you
