A male Ruddy Duck, 10 American Coots, 60 Canada Geese and a pair of Mallards were the only water birds seen at the partially open Alfred Sewage Lagoons yesterday.

Most of the deteriorating ice should be gone by the week-end, making way for many new arrivals.

NEW ACCESS PROPOSAL
Within the next few months the municipality will be voting on a new access proposal. A multi-partner committee is proposing that an elevated viewing platform be constructed outside the fence for free viewing by the general public. Individual hard-core birders would be offered a $20 seasonal permit and groups would need a $20 permit for the day to bird inside the fence. I'l keep you posted on the outcome of the vote. MEANWHILE a free permit ( signed-waiver) good for one day is now required. Access is limited to week days only. To make arrangements to obtain a permit phone the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet office at (613) 673-4797.

DIRECTIONS: From the town of Alfred go southeast on Highway 17, then turn south on Peat Moss Road and drive for 2 km. The lagoons are on your left (east side of road).
