Howdy, y'all,

The following is posted with the permission of Mark Cranford.

Google Maps and Ontbirds could be a beautiful thing!

Google Maps is just like Mapquest, etc. But with one added feature that
could make finding a bird in Westmeath Twp, or something way down here in
Windsor a whole lot easier.

That feature is this. While Mapquest allows you to zoom into a specific
location, Google Maps allows you to link directly to where you zoomed in.
You can then copy that address, and paste it into an email message. Then
anyone on Ontbirds can go to exactly where you saw the bird. It's an
incredible technology!

A quick how-to. Let's take Randy's last post of the Lark Sparrow here in
Windsor:

1) visit http://maps.google.com/

2) type in Windsor, Ontario in the "search" field. Click "search".

3) with your own knowledge of the area you've just seen your bird, find your
way to a nicely zoomed in place on the map.

TO ZOOM: use the small navigation tools in the upper left hand corner of the
map

To Move around on the map: click and HOLD the LEFT mouse button, then drag
your way around the map.

4) Near the right hand corner of the screen, is a "Link to this page" link.
it will bring you to a page that you can now bookmark, or in our case, copy
the address (in the top address bar), and copy it into your email message!

So to find out where Randy is talking about, i can also leave this link:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=windsor,ontario&ll=42.321075,-82.924125&spn=0.018219,0.034250&hl=en

5. Note that this is just a supplement to your text directions, which are
still very very important.

So try it out. It's good times. Promise!

At least I think its good times.

If anyone needs a hand figuring this out, feel free to send me an email:

Also, in the upper right corner is a link "satellite" that gives you a
satellite image of the area. Some areas have more detailed photos than
others. For the Ottawa area you can zoom in to maximum. It gives you a
good idea before-hand of the kind of terrain you are dealing with.
