A friend and I went east of Ottawa this morning (Friday) and found much of the same as Roger Clark's posting from yesterday. We checked out Milton Rd, Frank Kenny Rd, Bourget / Cobbs Lake Creek, Riceville, Fournier (having lunched at St Isadore), and Alfred, ending our day at Petrie Island.

Here is part of Roger's posting:
"We found two good-sized flocks of Snow Geese (at least 99% white morph). The first flock numbered around 1,500 birds & was located just east of Bourget in the Cobbs Lake Creek area, where Russell Road (Hwy 2) turns north (Boudreau Road). We walked in along the old railway path heading into a bitter westerly wind for about 1 km. The second flock numbered around 500 birds & was located on a small "island" in the flooded area north of Hwy 16 between Riceville & Bradley Creek.

There is extensive flooding throughout the area & some smaller side roads are closed to traffic (notably Hwy 19 south through Pendleton)."

We also found a pair of Gray Partridge at the elbow east of Bourget, a nest with a sitting Red-tailed Hawk on Alfred Station Rd and at Petrie Island we watched 12 Hooded Mergansers and near them, 2 playful otters! We didn't see the Northern Harriers or the Northern Shrike.

Directions:
From Ottawa, heading east on Russell Rd to Carlsbad Springs, or exit 96 from the 417 and north on Boundary Rd to Russell Rd and then east to Milton Rd. There is extensive flooding on both sides of the roads for Milton and Frank Kenny (parallel to Milton). Bourget is further east on Russell Rd. Nearly all smaller roads are either under water a some point or soon to be under water. The little access road to the dyke will be one of these. It is opposite Boileau Rd. From St Isadore we went north on #9 (from 417 is exit 51) as far as Lalonde, then back to Franklin's Corner and east to Fournier. We took #15 north via Alfred Station Rd to #17, then west to Ottawa, stopping at Petrie Island. This is accessed by Trim Rd and #174 (also old #17).
