Hi Ontbirders,

Dave Minns & I spent much of this morning (Thursday, 1 April) looking for Snow
Geese in likely areas to the east of Ottawa.

Our route took us through Carlsbad Springs, Milton Road, Wall Road, French Hill
Road, Clarence Creek, St. Pascal, Bourget, Curran, Riceville, Lemieux,
Ste-Rose-de-Prescott, & Casselman.

We found two good-sized flocks of Snow Geese (at least 99% white morph). The
first flock numbered around 1,500 birds & was located just east of Bourget in
the Cobbs Lake Creek area, where Russell Road (Hwy 2) turns north (Boudreau
Road). We walked in along the old railway path heading into a bitter westerly
wind for about 1 km. The second flock numbered around 500 birds & was located
on a small "island" in the flooded area north of Hwy 16 between Riceville &
Bradley Creek.

There is extensive flooding throughout the area & some smaller side roads are
closed to traffic (notably Hwy 19 south through Pendleton).

Among other species seen during the morning: thousands of Canada Geese,
hundreds of Northern Pintail, a few of Green-winged Teal, a pair of Northern
Shovelers, one American Wigeon, small numbers of Red-tailed Hawks, Rough-legged
Hawks (light & dark phases), American Kestrels, Northern Harriers, one Northern
Shrike, a few Killdeer, & small flocks of Song Sparrows.

Good spring birding!

Hi Everyone
The birding at Presqu'ile was very good today, still lots of diving
ducks in Presqu'ile Bay. Saw the male Eurasian Wigeon at 7:45am off Bayshore
Drive between house #22 and #36. We saw the wigeon fly once north towards
the first lookout. There was also a good number of American Wigeon 200+
along Bayshore Drive. The wigeon was present yesterday 3:30pm to 5:00pm in
the same area. Checked for the Eurasian Green-winged Teal both days, with no
luck. There was a Northern Shrike at Owen Point yesterday and a Great Egret
today in Presqu'ile Marsh.
                                                            good birding

Directions: To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from
Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that
is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is
restricted at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial
nesting birds there.
