Encouraged by the posting by Kathryn Mills on Friday I attempted to see and
photograph short-eared owls at and near the Fisherville Raptor Reserve this
afternoon. I saw at least one rough-legged hawk and a beautiful adult male
northern harrier. The owls stayed well hidden in the trees around house
#343. I arrived about 3:30 pm and the owls did not start hunting until 6:30
pm. Nice to see but too late for flight photography. I saw six, possibly
seven birds.

There are many red-winged blackbirds, starlings, grackles, robins and a few
horned larks in the area as well. The activity of the red-wings went on
until sunset. The owls are moving out so act fast!

Take Hwy 6 South of Hamilton to Hagersville. At the lights after Tim
Hortons, turn left onto Road 20 (King Road). There is no sign saying this
is Road 20 and very difficult to see and read the King Road signage. Turn
right on 53, The owls are on Concession Road 6 between 53 and 12 just north
of Fisherville. Coming from 53, the preserve is just past a dip in the road
with a creek in it. The house where the owls roost is #343.
