Birders,

On my way to the atlas Workshop at Point Pelee I decided to stop off at the South East beach parking lot at Hillman Marsh. Upon setting up my scope, low and behold I had set it up on a male Eurasian Wigeon (I must add that it was not one of the individuals seen last week at the shorebird/waterfowl cell.) Seconds after I saw the bird I called the park to tell Sarah What I saw when all of a sudden the bird took flight. I followed the bird in my scope only to see that the male Eurasian Wigeon was defending a "female Wigeon" from 7 or so male American Wigeons from actually trying to mate the bird in flight! As these birds circled the marsh I noticed also that the male Eurasian was much larger and very aggressive against the American males. After about 5 minutes of chasing the birds finally landed where the Eurasian male "shooed off" the other males again. Where the pair landed it was too far out to positively id the female. I then decided to move my position to get a better look only to have the female bird face me and fall asleep! ah! So there you have it. that my story!

South East Beach parking lot: From Point Pelee follow Con. C east through the onion fields till it turns into east beach road. follow this road north till you reach the end and you are in the area where I saw the bird(S).

thanks to Mike and Paul for the great workshop.

Happy Easter.
