Today at Upper Nicholson's Lock on the Rideau River, we saw male Hooded Mergansers in the water under the bridge at Andrewsville. In the trees along the south shoreline of the river, there were numerous Cedar and Bohemian Waxwings.
Directions: Take the Kemptville exit off Hwy 416 and go west on Hwy 43. Turn right on County Rd 23 until you get to Upper Nicholson's which is about 8km or so from Merrickville. I just returned from Grand bend yesterday - there were no swans here yet - the area is snow and ice bound, but I would expect the birds to show up anytime. There were a few gulls and even fewer ducks. I did see one flock of about 50 Tundra Swans flying south over the Ausable River at Hungry Hollow, while watching the Townsend's Solitaire(got it on my 4th,try). Cheers! Maris Directions from Toronto - Hwy.#401 to Hwy.#402 - off at Hwy #81(2nd.Strathroy exit) - north on #81 to Hwy #7 - jog right at Parkhill to follow #81 - turn left at Greenway Rd. to Hwy.# 21. The main area is on the left before you reach #21 - Goose Marsh Road runs parallel to and east of #21. Good luck and cheers!
