The snowy weather this morning made the bird watching a bit bleak at first but
once it ended things started to happen. Four Great Gray Owls (all in the
vicinity of the snowmobile trails) were still hunting along Doane Road (east
side of 2nd Concession). Another Great Gray Owl was sitting in a tree on the
east side of 2nd Concession north of Doane Road at the bottom of the hill just
past the small bridge. To my surprise these owls were still active by 11:00 am
when I left and had not headed into the woodlots.

Other highlights for the morning were my first chorus of Red-winged Blackbirds
on the north side of Doane Road where the owls were seen, a Peregrine Falcon
flyover (10:15 am) at the top of the hill on 2nd Concession just north of Doane
Road and a Red-shouldered Hawk sitting on the Treeline Investors Inc. sign
(8:15 am) about 500 m south of Mt. Albert Road on the east side of 2nd
Concession. The odd snow bunting was also seen in the areas where the owls were
found along Doane Road.

>From Davis Street in Newmarket, go north on Main Street, past Green Line Road,
>then just past Mt. Albert Road until you reach Doane Road. Turn right (east)
>on Doane Road and about 1 km down the road you should hit the snowmobile trail
>area (field on south side) where these birds are hunting. If you continued
>going north past Doane Road on 2nd Concession, the other owl sat at the bottom
>of the hill. About 1/2 km south of Mt. Albert on the same concession was the
>Red-shouldered Hawk (on sign, east side). The peregrine was a flyover so I
>doubt it is still where I saw it.

Approx.40 OFO members in 19 cars toured Long Point region looking for =
early migrants & to view the tundra swan spectacle. The swans were =
everywhere, more than 10,000 in the fields & in the air all day .Just to =
hear ther calls was worth the trip.
Altogether counting any bird at least one participant saw , we =
tallied 58 species on the day.
Highlights: golden eagle ( seen sitting in a tree & then flying, south =
of Concession# 2 , 2 km west of Hwy#59 ), two groups of sandhill cranes =
in among the swans in the corn fields on the north side of Front Rd. =
west of Hwy#59 , a screech owl at Big Creek on the "A" Concession, 2 =
adult bald eagles, a green-wing teal at Silver Lake in Port Dover , =
white-crownded sparrow in Fisher's Glen . There were a surprising number =
of waterfowl considering the lack of open water & the cold weather this =
month.
Long Point is located at the south end of #59 Hwy & most of the =
area covered was on the west side of #59.
Fishers Glen is on Lake Erie between Port Dover & Port Rowan

I took a long walk this afternoon down Riverside Drive in Windsor...by
Reaume Park and Goose Bay Park across from Belle Isle. It appears that all
the ice flows have broken up and all the ice is gone!! It's about time.
There was a pair of Canada Geese in Reaume Park and 10 pairs of Mallards
displaying mating behaviour and 2 pairs of Canada geese along with lots of
regular old seagulls in Goose Bay Park. There was also one unidentifiable
song biird singing his heart out all day so far, outside my home. I'll try
to see what it is...
