AMHERST I. [Pge 36, Quad't E54 & 55]
Janet Scott reported on Saturday, Feb. 26 At the Owl Woods a GREAT GRAY OWL,
a BOREAL OWL, and a LONG-EARED OWL. and from the Marshall Forty Foot a
SHORT-EARED OWL.
DIRECTIONS: The ferry to Amherst I. leaves from a dock at the western side
of Millhaven. It is reached from the 401 Hwy by taking exit 593 on to County
Rd. 4 going south to Millhaven. Jog right (west) about 100 m. onto Hwy 33 to
the ferry dock waiting line. The ferry costs $5.00 Cdn return and starts at
6:20 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and every hour on the half hour. The KFN property is on
the east side of the Lower Road. It is entered by a movable gate at the
south end of Lower Rd.
WOLFE I. [Page 36, Quads 56 & 57]
Feb. 27, '05, Eleanor Sachs & I birded the west end of Wolfe Island for 3
hours. The only open water was in the ferry path. Where we saw 200 MALLARDS
near the Kingston dock, 7 COMMON MERGANSERS, 4 HERRING GULLS, 3 SNOWY OWLS,
3 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 AM. KESTREL, 65 HORNED LARKS, 200 SNOW BUNTING.
A couple from Ottawa covering different roads had the above & 3 RING-NECKED
PHEASANT and 7 RED-TAILED HAWKS.
OTHER SIGHTINGS
At Cartwright Point, at #14 The Point Road, TUFTED TITMICE, CAROLINA WRENS &
PILEATED WOODPECKERS are seen most days. Also RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH & a PINE
SISKIN. At 3:00 a.m. Wednesday Mar. 2, a pack of COYOTES were "Yiking"
behind our house. Others had seen the COYOTES about 6 weeks ago taking down
& eating 4 WHITE-TAILED DEER on the ice by Cedar I..
Paul O'Toole observed a mature bald eagle on Tuesday March 1, p.m. around
4:30, while driving down hwy. 15 about half way to the turn off to the 401.
It was flying not far up heading east. He was able to get a good look at it.
