Despite the mid-February doldrums, some quality birds were reported. At Remic rapids on the Ottawa River there was a male Greater Scaup and 2 male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the 17th. A male Bufflehead at the Deschenes rapids the same day is likely the same bird that has been occasionally seen here since mid-December. A hybrid male Barrow's X Common Goldeneye has been seen on the Rideau River behind the Rideau Tennis Club since at least the 6th and is still present. Farther south along the Rideau at the Narrow's lock near Crosby, up to 7 Trumpeter Swans have been reported since the 11th. The 12 GRAY PARTRIDGE at the northeast corner of Moodie & Brophy Dr. were still present here on the 19th. On the 17th, 5 Wild Turkeys were at the Duck Club feeders on March Valley at Riddell Rd. and 4 were on Corkstown Rd. near the Ottawa Municipal Campground. Back on the 13th, 7 Wild Turkeys were at Dunrobin Rd. & Kilmaurs Side Rd. Two Snowy Owls continue to be reported from the Eagleson & Fallowfield Rd. area, the NORTHERN HAWK OWL at ski trails #29 and #5 at the southeast end of Gatineau Park is still hanging in, and several GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen over the week in many of the previously reported areas. On the 16th there was a male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along the trail off Kerwin Rd. west of Kanata. A Tufted Titmouse reported from the Almonte area back in December is still coming to a backyard feeder, and was most recently seen on the 19th. Please contact the property owner, Rod Goodwin at256-0551, as the feeders must be viewed from inside the house. The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Rothwell Heights was last reported on the 13th but is likely still in the neighbourhood. Bohemian Waxwing sightings continue to increase, with flocks of varying sizes seen this past week in Gatineau Park as well as west of Ottawa. 20 Cedar Waxwings were on March Valley Rd. on the 17th. Horned Lark and Snow Bunting reports have also begun to increase; good numbers were found in the Casselman area on the 18th, and 6 Lapland Longspurs were seen in 3 locations in the vicinity of Concessions #20 and #21 near Ste-Rose St. Thank you - Good birding! - End transcript
