howdy, y'all.

tuesday, feb. 1st. 3:00pm, from the mouth of the detroit river on the
windsor side, south of peche island, we had the following:

1 white winged scoter
3 long-tailed duck
a few red breasted mergansers
1 bald eagle (on peche island)
a few redhead
and of course thousands of canvasback, goldeneye, common mergansers,
smaller numbers of scaup, bufflehead, and growing numbers of mute and
tundra swans. and a few great blue herons on the ice.

quite a sight on this part of the river. worth taking a look for sure.

and although he hasn't posted it yet (which he should), randy horvath
also told me about a lesser-black backed gull he's been seeing on the
river. keep your eyes peeled!

and also, i had a red fox running around on the ice off the eastern
tip of peche island on monday afternoon, about 4:00pm.

enjoy!

(the best vantage point is sand point beach, reached by going 2 km
east of riverdale on riverside drive east. also a few km west of
lesperance, again, on riverside drive east. the marina at riverdale
and riverside drive also provides a great vantage point.)

Okay, so Cardinals are by no means a rare sighting around SW Ont. But in light
of the fact that today is Groundhog Day, it would seem that this bird decided
to get his prediction in first! I heard a lone Cardinal singing this morning
around 7:20 am while waiting at a bus stop in Guelph. Can spring be that far
behind? (Sorry Willie for stealing your show)

Direction: The bird was heard from the first Guelph Transit stop on College Ave.
>From the Hanlon Expressway (Hwy 6 North), take Stone Rd west until it ends at
College, at which point you are forced (or at least strongly encouraged) to
turn right. The stop is on the right just afetr Flanders Dr, which is teh first
road on the right.

Had excellent views of N. Hawk Owl by parking off road at house # 3825 =
and being invited onto front porch. Please do NOT park near, or across =
road from house # 3865. That disturbs the dog and his owner...Usually =
the hawk owl is on utility wires between Kellogg Rd and house # 3825. =
Was seen at 10:30 a.m.

Exit Hwy 401 at exit 461. Go north to Welcome, turn left (west) at the =
flashing light. Watch wires from Kellogg Rd. west. If you continue =
west to Deer Park Rd and turn north, one is likely to see a Northern =
Shrike within the first 1/2 km.

Greetings,

Cameron Rutt and i did a three day swing thru the province last =
Friday-Sunday. We decided to skip Amherst Island on Friday, forging on =
instead toward Ottawa. After seeing some of the owls at March Valley =
Road, we drove out to the east gate of Algonquin after dark. Birded =
thru the park on Saturday morning, then headed down to Bracebridge for =
the Hawk-Owl, and on to Orillia for more owls at sunset. Started early =
on Sunday east of Peterborough, and drove back roads toward the =
southeast, ending up at he ferry to Amherst Is by early afternoon. Had =
a great trip, with a couple lifers for each of us. Details of our =
itinerary are below, as summarized by Cameron. Many thanks to all of =
the Ontario birders who helped us out, especially Bruce in Ottawa!! A =
few pix from the trip have been posted at =
http://userweb.netcarrier.com/~etter/ontario.htm if interested. We =
ended the trip with 42 species.

****Friday, 28 January****

Gray Partridge (1) - west of Ottawa off of Highway 417. Take the exit =
for Terry Fox road and head south. Upon reaching Maple Grove Rd, take a =
right until you come to a church on the right. A single bird was =
feeding in the snow in front of the church.

Snowy Owl (2 adult males) - west of Ottawa off of Highway 417. Take the =
Eagleson Rd exit south until you reach Fallowfield Rd. One of the owls =
was just past this intersection in the cornfield. The other was =
slightly farther south from an adjacent road (I believe Brownlee)

Great Gray Owl (4) - although we got stuck in traffic we just made it in =
time to see these owls at dusk. These birds were seen by taking Highway =
417 west from Ottawa until you reach the exit for March Rd. Take this =
north until you reach Klondike Rd and take a right. We had a bird from =
this road and the rest from March Valley Rd which can be obtained from =
Klondike Rd.=20

Northern Shrike (1)- seen heading north on 416 towards Ottawa

Bohemian Waxwing (a huge flock of 128 individuals). Where the Hawk Owl =
was being seen off the ski trail in Gatineau Park, Quebec.

****Saturday, 29 January****

Ruffed Grouse (1)- seen on Arowhon Rd in Algonquin Park.

Northern Hawk Owl (1)- seen off of Robert Dollar Rd in Bracebridge

Great Gray Owl (23)- seen from 4:45-6:00, they were all over the area =
west of Orillia. If you are heading south on 11 from Bracebridge, take =
12 south through Atherley and Uptergrove until you reach Muley Pt Rd. =
Take this right and also bird along Con Rd 8. In this general area we =
found all of the owls.

Gray Jay (5)- Algonquin Park. Spruce Bog Trail and Opeongo Rd.

White-Winged Crossbill (90+) The two above locations, the main road, and =
Arowhon Rd.

Boreal Chickadee (3) Spruce Bog Trail in Algonquin Park

Snow Bunting (100) The Great Gray Owl location on Muley Pt Rd.

****Sunday, 31 January****

Ruffed Grouse (1)- just off of 62 (north of Belleville) on some road =
that heads towards Tweed.

Great Gray Owl (5) Division Rd east of Peterborough

Boreal Owl (1) In a cedar just beyond the feeders at Owl Woods, Amherst =
Island

Northern Saw-whet Owl (1) One of the last cedars on the left before you =
exit the woods into the Jack Pine area. This was beyond the feeders at =
Owl Woods, Amherst Island

Northern Shrike (1 adult) Division Rd east of Peterborough

Brown Thrasher (1) the feeders at Owl Woods, Amherst Island

Pine Grosbeaks (a surprising tally of ~80 individuals) This was =
basically in 4 different flocks. We had a group of ~10 at 521 Division =
Rd east of Peterborough. The other birds were in the general area where =
I described the Ruffed Grouse. ~20 birds were just off of 62 on the =
con*? Rd,, 15 were further down that road, and ~35 were on 13 west of =
Tweed!!

Common Redpoll (85+) Division Rd east of Peterborough. There were a =
nice sized flock at around 500(?) Division Rd and a few more near 521.

Snow Bunting (~248) ~180 were seen on 14 near Enterprise and 68 were =
seen on the southeast end of Amherst Island

Eastern Towhee (1) this bird was heard near 521 Division Rd east of =
Peterborough.

Northern Cardinal same area as towhee

Good birding!
