Did not see the bird until well after daylight (1/27/05) when it appeared on the ground under the feeders with Evening Grosbeaks. Got about 15 minutes of good looks at the "interior" (grey-crowned). Other birders said it was in a nearby tree for an extended time. Homeowner was quite cogenial. Chatted with him the late afternoon before and he suggested I get my radiator up (down?) to speed because temps of -38C were expected overnight. So I got the radiator fluid installed to -50C (down from 0 F) and 5W30 oil and windshield wash certified to -45C. And still needed a "boost" at 6AM. The van idled for over 1/2 hour and still was not up to normal operating temperature. It took hours for the interior to warm up altho the van has two heaters. It was so cold that .... 30F felt balmy and I took my jacket and hat off (after < -30C).
