Ontbirders We learned of this bird a day or so ago but were specifically asked/told not to post. Among the issues was concern that the feeder owners did not want visitors. We went today to check it out and to see what we could do to pave the way for others keen on seeing this bird. Those concerns about the owners are unfounded. The homeowners are John and Carol Somerset (mailbox says Somerset). They have no problem with birders coming and were most hospitable.
We arrived at about 10:40 and first saw the bird at 10:55. We watched it off and on for 15-20 minutes; when it flew off we went to the house. The feeders are all in the front yard but the bird spent most of the time feeding on seed broadcast at the driveway edge. By parking on the road shoulder it is possible to obtain excellent views of all the birds here from the car and without disturbing them. As it was -40 this morning viewing from the car had other advantages. John Somerset said that the bird has been present about a month. It visits most when the weather is cold. He sees it regularly just before sunrise and then off and on during the morning. Although he hasn't seen it in the afternoon it could be that he doesn't look as much. For example, it was there when we left just after noon. These were very busy feeders with lovely Pine and Evening Grosbeaks, Redpolls and other birds. If you go, a nice gesture would be to make a donation of bird seed to the Somersets. Directions: See Jean Iron's post. You can get there by proceeding straight north on Montee Principale from County Road 35. There is a huge Sudbury Downs casino sign telling you where to turn north. When you get to Seguin the road just curves to the east and becomes Seguin i.e. there is no intersection. There's is the first house on the left (north) side. Green number 374.
