What a gorgeous, albeit brrrr c-c-cold morning it was between 0730 and 0830
on Friday, Jan.21. I went back to Hall's Rd. several times. Over the course
of the morning I met some great folk from many places-- Phoenix, Burlington,
Peterborough, Detroit, even Toronto--. My favourite sighting was an adult
N.GOSHAWK flying from the west over the roadway to roost in wooded copses
near the wetlands. An immature Sharp-shinned was noted near the entrance to
the north path--3 days in succession. Songbirds-- 1 White-throated Sparrow,
Juncos, Goldfinch, House Finch, Tree Sparrows, Mourning Doves, N.Cardinal,
Blue Jay,----

During the early hour I spotted 7 Great Gray Owls--5 along Hall's Rd., and 2
over near the foot of Lakeridge Rd. to the west. I have not seen the Barred
Owl myself for several days, but there have been reports of it recently.

On Saturday, Jan.22, I am meeting people to lead them around the county
roads of north Whitby and Pickering. You are welcome to join in--it is a
potluck invite, sponsored by the Durham Field Naturalists. We meet before
9a.m. at the little country church-- Mt. Zion U.C. -north side of
Pick.Concession 8, just east of Salem Rd. I "guarantee" Red-bellied
Woodpecker, Pine Siskins, Black-necked Swans (!!!!)---We return to the
church in the noonhour time-for potluck enjoyment and camaraderie.

Doug Lockrey, Whitby
