Took a very early trip to Whitby today from the Hamilton area to see the owls.
Weather was very snowy but we managed to see one Great Grey Owl right on the
path near the end of the road and then one barred owl sitting watching the bird
feeders on the other path. These were the first of these owls we had ever seen
in the wild so were very excited and glad we made the long trip.

Some winter birds in Huron-Perth seen yesterday and today by myself and
co-worker Caroline Walmsley:

Snowy Owl - adult bird atop a hydro pole west of Lucknow on hwy 86 near
division line. Seen yesterday (18/01/05) in early afternoon.

Eastern Bluebird - seen north of Kintail on the west side of hwy 21. Orginally
seen flying parrallel to the hwy in blustery conditions this morning (19/01/05)
around 8:15a.m. It stoped briefly in a grove of trees and then continued
northward.

Bald Eagle - adult bird seen in a hedgerow on Eighteen Mile Line just northeast
off hwy 21. Seen this morning minutes after and only slightly north of the
bluebird.

Other highlights:
- 2 rough-legged hawks
- numerous small flocks of Snow Buntings
- a few small flocks of Horned Larks

Happy birding,
Brett Woodman

Hello All

Have just returned(1530) from conducting a perimeter inspection of Pearson
International Airport.Inspection done in company with Manuel Costa, Wildlife
Control Officer at Pearson. Manuel is also a registered breeder of Hawks.

Day is overcast and -5 C. Several light snowsqualls between 1100 and 1300
hrs. Nothing of great note, 4 Red Tails, 6 Rough-legged (2 are very dark
morphs - 1 a dark chocolate brown and the other midnight black) , 1 female
Snowy Owl, 3 snow buntings, 2 jack rabbits, 1 Red Fox, and fresh coyote tracks
and droppings. From the droppings it appears that Voles are very abundant in
the area as they made up at least 80+ % of the droppings. The red tails and
rough-legged were on the cut grass along the runway edges listening for the
voles under the snow. Most seemed to be having a good measure of luck.
Unfortuately all the above listed were within the restricted areas of the
airport.

The only public area where a raptor etc. may be seen is along the West side of
the airport where Courtenay Park East crosses the Etobicoke Creek. All other
airport roads are posted as "tag and tow" . The bridge over the creek is a
good vantage point in the spring and fall to see Red Tail, Rough-legged, Red
Shouldered, Sharp Shinned, Broad Winged and the odd Cooper's Hawk. Other birds
that pass through or that breed in the area are Belted Kingfisher, Great Blue
Heron, Turkey Vultures, American Goldfinch, Lesser Goldfinches, variety of
sparrows, as well as other passerines. In the spring you may see a Doe with
her Fawn(s) south of the bridge in the reforestation area. (Please do not walk
into this area.)

Courtenay Park East can be accessed from Dixie Road, Mississauga. From South (
Lakeshore, QEW, Hwy #5, 401) exit to Dixie Rd North, turn right onto Courtenay
Park bridge is approx 1 km. From the North( Hwy#7, Steeles Ave, 407 or Derry
Rd) turn south on Dixie, turn left on Courtenay Park.

Good Birding to all

I saw a Mockingbird in the front yard of a home in the Woodbine
-Danforth area of Toronto this
morning. It seemed quite tame. There has also been a Merlin in the
neighborhood since Nov.
It regularly perches on a T.V antennae next to my house at Orley and
Westlake avenues in the morning, often eating its breakfast. the
Mockingbird was seen on Chisolm ave. between Orley
and Epsom ave. If someone could tell me whether either sighting is
worth further report it would be appreciated.

Anthony Glenesk

Chisolm ave. is located one block west of Main st. north from Danforth
ave.
Orley Ave is 6 blocks north of Danforth.
